Yeah, we can talk about/ask questions about/get support here I suppose. I figured there's enough interest to warrant a thread.

I'll start off with a question: If I use a USB loader to load ISOs from my USB drive, do I need to do anything else to my wii for it to work? (I know you have to partition the drive.)

Actually, one of the newer loaders supports loading from a fat32 formatted drive.

Edit: I suppose I should be more specific before people ask.

1) Your wii needs cIOS 222/223 by hermes
2) You need to use the loader configurable USB loader (This loader also allows you to dump your own wii DVDs easily)
3) You need to convert your isos to the WBFS format. There's a command line tool but I use Wii Backup Manager.

"Configurable USB loader" is my personal favorite, and I've had much better success with it then with USB Loader GX. It supports loading off FAT32 partitions, coverflow, automatic updates, and a myriad of other pretty features.

While you can use the FAT32 format for loading ISOs, if you're storing games on a large external harddrive, I would recommend you use the WBFS system, because full-game files won't require splitting that way (to fall under the file-size cap of 4GB required by FAT32) you can use the WBFS manager to format and access games on your HD that way.

There's only a small handful of games that go over the 4gb limit. Metroid Prime 3 and Brawl are the only two I can think off the top of my head.

And even then, formatting drives is a pain in the arse and is quite often a less efficient use of space unless you want to format the entire drive. :/

I have a 250GB portable HD that I partitioned. 60GB NTFS (I originally used FAT32 on this partition, but NTFS support is emerging on most homebrew now, and it allows larger file transfers between two of the computers in my home) for holding various media files, and 190GB WBFS for the game collection.

If you decide to partition and format, Easeus Partition Master is a great piece of software for the job.

Yeah, I'd like to use NTFS myself, but Mac OS doesn't support it as it's a microsoft format :/

I'm planning on using my 8GB flash drive, so what do you guys recommend? I wasn't planning on dumping my own ISO, but since I have the NSMBWii disk I might as well give it a shot.

I have access to a 1TB external HDD, but it's technically my sister's, and I don't think she'd appreciate my partitioning her disk and moving it away from the computer.

If you're using a flash drive, then I guess there should be no issue to just format the entire thing as WBFS.

And yeah, that's what's neat about the Fat32 loading, you don't need to format them. ¬_¬

Then you're best sticking with FAT32. And unless you want to download tools to scrub the iso after you rip it, you might just be better off finding a copy online.
It depends on what you think would be faster.

But yeah, Configurable USB Loader for sure.

I'm currently torrenting it anyways, but it's going pitifully slow. I'm downloading the full iso instead of a scrubbed one, not sure why, but whatever. Should I find a torrent for a pre-scrubbed one instead?

So let me get this straight: I'll need to:
Install cIOS 222/223 by hermes
Get the configurable USB Loader homebrew app
Have the ISO on my USB drive (Formatted as FAT32 or WBFS)

Are there are risks installing cIOS 222/223 I should be worried about?

Xeruss: The WBFS conversion scrubs the files anyhow.

Boing: There's no reason to not download scrubbed isos, all you're doing is taking more time :/

Yes. Yes you should.

I don't know much about this cios, because I've never used it before. You will need to meet the other two list criteria though.

It's the same as the risk of installing any other homebrew mods to the filesystem - don't screw with anything you don't need to. As long as you don't touch the IOS that the System is currently using and you have a bootmii backup, you should be peachy though.

Alright, killing torrent. It's completely stopped anyways.

Thanks for the help guys, I should be able to handle myself for a bit now.

QWRev Release 1 is out

Heriberto Delgado has ported the QuakeWorld Client to the Nintendo Wii. This client will let you connect to any QuakeWorld server (since the original servers protocol hasn't been used in over 10 years) and has full network support, supports downloadable maps and connects with virtually any QuakeWorld server in the world.

It works with Quake 1 and 2. I haven't tested it out yet, but it's probably pretty cool.

From what I've tried of it, it's not as good as the other Quake port, unfortunately. The controls are a lot more constrictive.
