Well, if you were to just install the hombrew channel, the softmod ios necessary installs to 249 - a slot unused by the original wii and therefore not dangerous. From there, your best option is a usb loader, which would require virtually no further modifications.
You can learn more here.

So far I've only been able to put about 5 hours or so into it. I've opened up all the worlds and I've been following my old SMB3 "solitaire" pattern Get to world 8 and beat the first part of the game. Than I'll go back and unlock everything I may have missed. Right now after 4 hours I am already at Bowser's castle with 76 lives. The Wii isn't at my apartment so I only have access to it on the weekends.

If anyone knows me I like the Fire Brothers enemy, (if you managed to have my hard to find mario 3 kafuka hack, you'll know this all too well. ) so I enjoyed the Ice Brothers take as well. I've had a lot of fun with this game. It feels like SMB3 all over again, and that's a great thing. It is a lot easier in most cases than Mario 3 as anyone reported. I've only had a few levels where I even died once in. However there are a few areas more difficult than others.

The process to install the homebrew channel isn't too bad actually. I've not done it since the Wii isn't just mine. If it was I would definatly do it. Just read all the instructions carefully, etc and you should ok.

I heard NSMBW was actually quite hard, so I've been wanting to get the game for awhile now... from what most people are saying here, is it worth getting ASAP or could I wait until Christmas and not miss out on too much? XP

Thanks for the suggestions XD

It's not too hard. The difficulty mostly comes from the "newness," if you know what I mean. People will probably be doing psychotic speedruns of it soon enough.

If you're diehard about Mario platformers like I am, you'll get it ASAP; it's no online game, though, so you can't really "miss out" by putting it off as long as you need/want to. :b

I saw KP9000's video about level 8-7. I can only say the game is freaking awesome. Can't wait anymore to get it and play it.

I also saw videos from Nintendo, the cooperative multiplayer mode seems awesome too, unlike Super Mario Galaxy's "coop" that is definitely the worst failure ever.

Eh, Mario Galaxy's 'co-op' was okay when I used it, because my kid sister likes to watch me play - she could do something helpful

Multiplayer in this is fun...it's kinda like an alternate smash bros. though XD

I think the multiplayer is friggin hilarious. Often times I was throwing or spitting the other player into pits by sheer accident or a stray fireball would pop their bubble over a pit or into the path of a moving platform and thus getting squished. All in all, I find NSMBWii a worthy 2D Mario game. Too bad it took over 10 years to get something like this a non-hand held.

It's a lot of fun. I'm pretty cheap, and hate a lot of games, but I feel like it was $50 well spent. My friends and I seem to alternate between genuinely cooperating and trying to throw one another down holes and things.

Also...
Spoiler:
I have every level in World 9 unlocked but 9-6 so far, and have all the star coins in each of those levels except 9-7. God, how I hate 9-7...

Either way, the multiplayer mode is meant to be a coop. Look, there's one coin counter for everyone; when one gets the 100th coin, the players all get a live; the ? blocks give an item for each player...

Also noticed what happens when some players don't have enough time to get into a pipe while the others are in: they still go through the pipe.

So, that doesn't mean you can't play competitively. I would play competitively if I had someone at my own skill level to play against.

IE, someone who actually USES the run button. I never am NOT holding it!

Well, according to some well-known early NSMB DS videos, NSMB DS was going to have a "coop" mode that was more of a race than a coop. Nintendo implemented it in NSMB Wii, but more like a coop.

By the way, I still wonder what happens to the other players in NSMB Wii when one reaches the flagpole...

The other players have a limited time to get to the flag pole, if they don't get there in time, the level clear cinematic goes on without them.

It's also worth mentioning that NSMBWii has a very competitive coin battle mode.

But I assume that, if they don't reach the flagpole in time, they don't die, do they?

Coin battle? Reminds me of Mario Kart Wii. Sounds cool also

Nah. They sacrifice the chance for any additional 1-ups though.

Phew. Then it's really coop.

Though I saw some videos where the players are throwing eachother in pits and whatever, I must guess it's just for amusement. Anyway the levels in NSMB Wii don't absolutely need coop gameplay; otherwise they'd be unplayable if you're alone.

Got this jewel of a game today.. and my.. I've never seen such brilliant designs for boss battles or levels in ages.

Completed up to 8-Fortress so far, prolly will finish tomorrow or soon.

Played it with my sister, and we had great fun.

I played about an hour into it with a friend of mine. I definitely plan to purchase it in the near future. I'm definitely one to advocate innovation, but even though they didn't really step it up in the area, I can't exactly complain about a really really solid 2-D Mario. I've always had a soft spot for sidescrolling co-op as well, and even though it's not exactly anything new to the gaming world, I'm certainly glad to see it finally implemented into a Mario game.

I had to resist temptation to watch the video of 8-7. I want it to a be a completely fresh experience when it curb-stomps me with it's alleged greatness.

Got this game (today) for Christmas. I've been playing it with two of my brothers, and so far we've made it to the World 4 Fortress. So far it's been gloriously ludicrously fun.

What I also absolutely love is the secret areas. They're even more secret that in NSMB DS.

So that now, when we play, we try to go on every ledge to see if it's not hiding a secret area. Hell, we saw one in that World 2 level with the wind, saw a ledge we missed, and replayed the level about 5 times or so before finally noticing that ledge was hiding nothing.
