After you entered that in a command prompt, Windows Update will never harass you again to reboot your computer.

Windows Update is particularly annoying when it automatically reboots your computer after five minutes or so if you do nothing. That means you can't leave your computer for five minutes without finding it rebooted, with all of your unsaved data lost

Now, I do find Windows update the most backwards thing ever (especially compared to your average Linux package manager), but... there's really no reason to outright disable the windows update service like that.

I just find it easier to select "download updates but let me decide when to install them". No reason to disable the update service. And yes, the computer won't restart with that option. It shows a icon in the taskbar saying that updates are ready to install, but that's about it.

Ahem.

At set times, the second Tuesday of the month IIRC, is Update Day for Windows. Annoying as it may be with the restarts and whatnot, you can be certain some form of security update will be there and will be installed. More critical updates are, IIRC, released, downloaded and installed outside of this schedule.

On a Mac it's like that, but with no fixed schedule.

In Linux, correct me if I'm wrong, you have to download the updates yourself. This brings its own problems.

In equivalent words, you can be certain some form of security issue will be there every week?

For the most part, you are wrong; while some distributions like Slackware, Arch, or Gentoo make this a very manual process by their design, the distributions aimed towards average users like Fedora, Ubuntu, or openSUSE make it rather painless and far easier of a process than Windows has ever done it. By default they don't automtically download and install updates (although they can be configured as such), but it does inform you when updates are available and you just click the bit "update now" button and it's all done for you.

That's a nice way of doing it, but the keyword here is "by default". I very clearly remember, when I installed Windows just recently. It asked me quite early on what kind of update scheme I wanted to use. I can't remember which radio button was preselected, but surely this should count for something?

Incidentally, I set it to exactly the scheme you just described right there and haven't looked back since.

Yeah, I had to reinstall Windows on some idiot's computer recently.. the default is to do it at 3am every morning, when his computer is never on; and it's always sporadic, he's the kind that always turns it off when not using it for more than a few minutes, so such a rigid schedule doesn't even make sense. Linux distributions on the other hand are likely to just use anacron or something similar which will run out tasks on the first bootup after you missed a scheduled time. Eg, Ubuntu can still automatically download updates even if your computer was off for the normal time.

Not to mention that, but given the default schedule Windows sets up, I had to go through the entire update process by hand on Windows, rebooting three times to recieve even more updates... and the whole thing had to be handheld as you had to click "I Agree" to various updates or setting up Internet Explorer 8....

Man, I didn't even do the whole "setting up IE8" thing. I just nabbed an Opera installer from backup and used that. But that's another topic altogether.

That default schedule does suck balls, I'll admit.

If you change an option in the Windows registry, it won't reboot by itself but just ask you to reboot the computer. Move that notice to the corner of the screen and you can reboot whenever you want.

Wait, what? Changing "an option in the registry" equals reboot (be it forced or asked for)? Please define "changing an option in the registry", cos by my definition (finding the option in Regedit or merging in a .reg file which is done by the same), that doesn't happen.

It just changes the behavior of Windows Update to not try to reboot by itself. It does not do anything else.

Did you perhaps mean, "make a change in the registry so that Windows Update doesn't reboot by itself"? Cos that'd make perfect sense.

Is that any different to what I said?

To me both have identical meaning.
