Geez, I just don't see how some of you play with your hands inverted like that... I personally use a more WoW-ish setup for my emulation controls if I don't have a controller. Here's what I do for the SNES:

Directional pad: W, S, A, and D.
A: Arrow right.
B: Arrow down.
X: Arrow up.
Y: Arrow left.
L: Q.
R: E.

Ever since I adopted this control scheme back in August, I haven't looked back. I suggest trying it out if you don't like some of the more obvious control schemes for the keyboard.

I can control just fine either way using WASD or arrow keys.

It's just I don't have half the entire keyboard at my fingertips if I'm using WASD.

Well, you get used to it either way, if you use it for long enough. I used arrow keys for directions, Z=A X=B (A=L S=R GBA) (A=X S=Y D=L C=R SNES) controls, before I got the usb connector for my PS2 controller (definitely prefer using it ).

I use a Logitech (and PS3 afterglow when I want to be blinded by green LEDs) controller normally, but when I use a keyboard I use:
WASD - Directions
H - Select
J - Start
K - B
L - A
U - Y
I - X
, - L
. - R

And suddenly, I realize that everyone else uses an absolutely fucking weird keyboard controls setup. I'd never be able to use any of that shit. I'm too used to my setup. :V

Oh well, to each his/her own.

btwguys, Chris Houlihan's Room doesn't get many visits.

The real thing to be honest. I prefer an actual controller over using a keyboard.

As a person who used to play a metric ton of shareware games as a wee little lad, keyboard controls are second nature to me. (Though Ctrl & Alt were in vogue back in the day, not Z & X. I blame the Windows Key.)

Damn you Windows key.

I have mine disabled, but that leaves a dead key between my Ctrl and Alt keys, so my emulators are set up to use Z and X for B and A.

What's with all the winkey hate, anyway? I use it all the time.

Oh, there's nothing wrong with the winkey's function per se.

It's the placement that bugs me. Just try playing a fullscreen game that uses Ctrl and Alt extensively. It's especially bad when you take your fingers off of them to enter a cheat code or something in the heat of battle. BAM! Screen res switch, desktop redraw, etcetera. Happy gaming!

Now it seems that even my N64 carts are starting to suffer from that problem.

That's why I couldn't stand cartridge gaming, it used to drive me nuts.

CD gaming isn't much better. Disks and lenses are liable to scratching, and it seems like consoles in general suffer from disk read errors the older they get. That's how my poor Gamecube ended up dying.

Fly to the coins
Blowing into your cartridges was never recommended anyway or a good way to treat the cartridge. Better to use the rubbing alcohol + cotton swab thing anyway, which is how all my N64 carts work at first insert now.

Also I have a USB controller (no analog sticks so I only use it for SNES or earlier, or GBA/DS or earlier) but I still prefer a real system, since you can't get things like the Super Game Boy emulated on the PC fully. (That was one of Nintendo's strokes of true genius. Borders, colors, extra sound core.)

As for my control setup for the keyboard, it's the VBA one edited to fit the context depending on the system I wish to play. (Except Z = A and X = B, not the other way around, and L and R are always A and S if the system has such buttons.)

If I want N64, then the C buttons are Home Delete End Page Down, for SNES, C = X V = Y, for Genesis C = C, 6 button Genesis A S D = X Y Z.

And both of the GameCubes I have don't have DREs. Both the first one I have which is Platinum and the backup one I bought for 7 dollars at a thrift store (Jet Black) work just fine.

Blowing on the metal connectors corrodes it supposdly. Only making the problem worse over the time. Due to the humidity in your breath.

I forgot to mention I own a USB controller that I use for all my emus. And my emulators, even.

I personally prefer the real thing. Emulation is necessary though since, unfortunately, my NES and N64 controllers don't work anymore. The Genesis I would play just completely stopped working years ago. My Game Gear still works, but the buttons on it do not. I only really play PS2, GameCube, and rarely Game Boy Color anymore; and the GameCube always gives us reading problems whenever we're playing Melee. I don't know if it's a common issue among GameCubes since I've never asked before, or if it's the game itself that is causing the problems if the fact it's used makes a difference.

My grandparents had an NES at one time, but it stopped working and has since been lost. I have an SNES with two "sort-of" working 3rd-party controllers (the d-pad is crap on these...). I have an N64 with ? controllers, most/all with barely functional analog sticks (they're so incredibly loose that you have to push it all the way to the edge to get anything to happen, and even then it's spotty). So yeah, I emulate those systems definitely. Plus, it's not really possible to play romhacks on the actual systems anyway (in some cases maybe, but it wouldn't be worth the expense to get the req'd equipment).

@Gywall: Uh, USB controllers... ?_?
