Has anyone noticed, when porting Japanese games over to American carts, they remove the Stupidest things, or change the stupidest things, that they don't need to?

For an example, when porting bouken no Link (Zelda 2), to Zelda 2, they changed the overworld monsters to slimes. The enemies look ALOT better on the Japanese version.

Things like that.

Why do they do that?

Hmm, I had no idea they did that... I thought most of the stuff changed was just censorship of sexual/religious things and needlessly changing characters' names in order to piss off a whole bunch of people.

I'd assume that the alternate sprites are shown in this YouTube vid and the normal ones (as in cart, etc) are in this picture.

Believe it or not, that was one of the videos I was watching before I mentioned this.

Pay close attention to the monsters on the overhead map.

But they don't just do it in this game, they do it in MANY.

Castlevania III they remove most of the altar on the intro, but, still leave the cross in. They just dumb it down.

Another disgrace, and I mean total disgrace is "Kamen no Ninja - Hanamaru" turned into "Yo! noid".

They changed the music on the first few stages, and the graphics, but, toward the end they didn't even try to change things, at all.

They left most of the last few stages the same graphics wise.

It's nothing but a "Fancy" text and graphics change. It was a bad change.

This is because of the difference between both systems. Nintendo and Famicom don't have the same specs, and they don't use the same ROM support. The Nintendo uses cartridges, the Famicom uses disks...

And it pains me to say this, but somethimes modifications are of policital nature. In other words, stupid nature...

I guess that's how they make their money. I'm also not sure why this doesn't have to be in the Gaming section.

Say whaaaaa-? No! Both are cartridge based! The Famicom Disk System was an add-on.

Pointless bullshit.

Who cares?

On topic: The fact that the formats are different make some changes sensible, but the political changes are retarded...

Except they're not at all different. The Famicom had an underutilized microphone and unremovable controllers with only player one having the Start button, but they were not that much different from a software POV.

It's not a fact, it's a falsehood.

Oh, and some sound differences. But still, if it's not for regional lockout measures, American/European carts can run on a Famicom and vice versa.

I think it really boils down to a few things

hardware/space issues: from disk to cart, or because translated text takes up more room. Or maybe the NES doesn't have the extra sound channels you'd like.

political issues: religion fits in with this. lots of crosses, references to beer or smoking are removed.

aesthetic issues/Finishing touches: sometimes graphics are improved upon, compare dragon quest and dragon warrior. Maybe the game was released in a rush in Japan, and more work was done on it before it got released in america.

I'd have to say most of the changes that take place fit in the first two.

Not you too, setz, not you too. The Famicom Disk System is not the same thing as the Famicom, and you too make it sound like it is!

The rest of your points are perfectly valid though.

Probably the most significant difference between the Famicom and American NES* is that the latter lacks support for sound expansion chips on carts.** This meant that for games that used extra sound chips, the soundtrack would have to be recomposed to fit into the NES's limitations (Castlevania 3) or not released in America all together (Gimmick!).

*The European NES, on the other hand, is just like the Famicom in this regard.

**IIRC, the "sealed port" on the bottom of the NES has sound ext. support, but it was never used.

On a related matter, you should see what Nintendo did when they ported Wolfenstein 3D to the Super NES. lulz.

I saw. I understand that iD software was so miffed, they practically -gave- Wisdom Tree the resources to make Super Noah's Ark 3D.

You kidding? Only Nintendo? SO many companies mess with games when they're localized and ported. Hell, look at Persona and Persona 2. Both had sprites and entire characters changed. Persona 2 was even split up into 2 games originally, but they only ported one of them over to the US!

As to the "why?" for this, I have no idea. People are stupid, I guess

I think Nintendo DOES think people are stupid, and/or can't handle the difficulty of things.

You ever note how much dumbed down some of the games we get are?

Like the Japanese versions are harder, and we only get the easy types.
