I usually don't buy them, but I've seen only a couple around me buy games from movies. Well, the only ones I can think of right now are Spiderman, but how about you? Do you like them?

The Spiderman games are actually a game based on a movie based on a comic book.

Your argument is invalid.

Now, Shrek games on the other hand... Actually, most games of movies tend to suck. Except Spiderman.

Agreed there. Quantum of Solace on the Wii is so badly done, the intro sequence actually lags.. and it's rather confusing as to what's going on in the plot.

is a game is based on a movie, it's pretty much destined to be horrible. there have been a scarce few exceptions to this rule, so few in fact that none come to mind at the moment.

Wasn't Goldeneye on the N64 based off the movie (at least to a certain extent it was)?

technically, I think so. that's why I said they're pretty much destined to be awful, it's not a complete guarantee. I honestly didn't care for that game much myself, though

This is because the producers don't care if the game is good or not. They just want a game of the movie. And they usually don't have much experience with making games.

I guess Peter Jackson's King Kong is one of the few good movie games. I haven't played it but I've seen the ratings.

And ofcourse, movies based on games.

I guess that also includes anime based on visual novels then.

Movie-based games weren't half as bad back when the technical limitations stopped them from extensively embedding what are essentially fanfics of the movie plot as a plot into the game; cf. the NES Batman games.

Most are terrible, but some are easy for achievements.

So far the game based off of Wolverine's movie isn't that bad. I'm very surprised.

And then you have Wanted, which was terrible and painful to play.

The problem with movie-based games, and licensed games in general, is money. Producers of movies (by and large) seem to think of games as just another part of their merchandising process, and thus try to rush the game out the door as quickly and cheaply as possible. Back in the day (ie 8/16-bit eras) this was a semi-effective strategy, since the money and manpower needed to make a good game was significantly less than it is nowadays (though actual talent has always been in short supply). Developers now have to simultaneously deal with the same ol' development times in addition to modern gamer expectations (the worst of which being "more").

...

Anyways, most good licensed games seem to have at least one of the following attributes:

1. The licenser has a genuine interest in producing a good game (King Kong, Chronicles of Riddick, "Epic Mickey"* (TBD))

2. The developer sought to acquire the license from the licenser, not the other way around (NES era Sunsoft, late-NES era Konami)

3. The release of the game is not meant to coincide with the release of a product (Goldeneye, Capcom/Disney)

There's definitely more things that could be added to this list, but I don't want to spend too much time writing this post.

*I hope that isn't the game's real title.

I don't really like movie games, mostly because of what RT-55J said... they're rushed and are generally not that great. I also play games for the storyline, so if I want to, I'll just watch the damn movie.

That's mostly why they suck. A game of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within might be good though...

Movies and video games are required to have a thick concrete wall between them at all times. Games based on movies suck, movies based on games suck, and movies based on the concept of a game (Gamer) suck. Period. But Hollywood sees dollar signs, no matter how much all of the above suck. I'm quite convinced that the directors of the above don't actually view the final product; they're too busy counting the cash.

I thought it was more of a failed attempt to remake The Running Man. Seriously now, a remake of an Arnod movie without Arnold is bound to fail.
