Here is a shmup in progress from well-known Fraxy player and boss maker, Eboshidori and friends called
FINAL BOSS.
It is made in GM6 and is very well done for being a demo. The concept is simple. You are fighting against a vast enemy fleet in order to eventually become worthy of being called... a Final Boss.
You start out with a front gun that acts very similar to the main shot from Ikaruga. As you destroy bosses, you have the option to gain new weapons to use in your quest. Be sure to choose wisely as you can only get one per boss.
The game has a few tributes to other classic shmups and it is a treat to see all the blatant and subtle ones. See how many you can find!
Also, there are secrets within the game (although I personally haven't found any yet...) to give better incentive for completing the demo.

There have been shmups that have been revolutionary, such as RayForce, Ikaruga, Gradius, R-Type, Xevious, Space Invaders, and so on, but no shmup I know of has dealt with evolution quite like this little gem.
Genetos is a shmup that takes a different approach to the standard affair. It goes through the evolution of shmup styles starting with Space Invaders and going through to evolution of life itself. It is done very well and the style and flow are quite refreshing.
The weapon system is interesting as well. As your ship changes, your weapons can also change if you meet certain criteria. There are three types of weapons the ship can use, provided the ship is at the appropriate level. They are the main shot, bomb, and secondary shot with the defaults being Normal, Circle, and Laser respectively. Once you get a new weapon, it is unlocked for use in Free Play mode via the History area.

Asker: How do I remove the border on a GroupBox in .NET?
Answer: Use a panel instead?
Asker: Gee, thanks @$$.
