http://www.monkkonen.net/notrium.php

Notrium is a survival game that takes place far in the future. You are stranded on a planet full of aliens that are looking for you. They aren't the only threat though.

*Can be modded with the right experience.
*Multiple endings.
*Changes with each new game.
*Day and Night changes are flawless in my opinion.
*Can give even an experienced survival gamer a challenge.
*Four different species available to play as, each with their own custom survival needs.

My Rating: 4/5
---------
http://www.glest.org/

Glest is an extremely well made RTS game. Unless you make a mod that has a plot to it no real plot is in this game.

*Can be modded with the right tools and experience.
*AI changes strategy each time.
*Thriving forum community. (Last I checked)
*Amazing graphics for a freeware game.
*Multiplayer available. (Fairly difficult to work though)

My Rating: 3/5
---------
These are just two of the games I can strongly recommend. I will post more later.

If you are a Gradius fan, then check out this: Nemesis Online

There are several interesting things about this one. As the Online part suggest, the game can (or is being planned on) connect others online and play the stages at the same time. There are also tools on the site so you can create your own stages. The only problem with this one is that the graphics feel a little strained but it's still a work in progress. Definitely worth checking out!

If it's in Spanish, there is a link at the top for an English page

POWDER GAME!

I found out about it like half a year ago.. I should've posted this here earlier.

Well...In this game, its like paint with physics. You get elements like metal, thunder, water, superball, nitro etc. And you can make ANYTHING! Oil mining, cities, pixel arts, guns, player courses(You can add a arrow-controlled player to your levels, and they recently updated for 2players-wasd) bombs, chain reactions, ANYTHING! I thought it was really fun. But the Japanese translations aren't that good, just like FRAXY! Be sure to hit the English button before you play! One more thing, you can look at other people's creations by hitting the Save Data, Weekly Rankings, or (Insert previous month) Rankings!

Here's the link:

http://dan-ball.jp/en/javagame/dust/

EDIT: Now that I think about it, the game itself isn't downloadable..Well I'm going to make a thread but leave this post as is, unless I can't.

I didn't expect Powder Game to be anything more than a bad Falling Sand Game clone. And then I played it. And then it was 2 hours later. Wind physics make everything better.

I'd recommend Spelunky but it has its own thread already so no reason to describe it here again.

So instead, Choke on my Groundhog, YOU BASTARD ROBOTS. Aside from having the greatest name ever, it's a 2d shooter where if you die you travel back in time and fight alongside yourself. Also has sweet paper cutout graphics.

Glitch

Glitch is a first-person arena shooter. What makes it unique is that everything is made up of particle effects, and the level architecture is made up of mobile columns which shift after each level, giving the game a very interesting digital/computerized feel. There is no story, just blasting stuff, and it's surprisingly fun.

Weapons:

Clawgun - your average, rapid-fire assault weapon; not very accurate. Effective for the first few levels, but not a great choice later on.
ACQUIRED FROM: 'Sparrow', a simple, purple enemy that tries to crash into you; very easy to avoid, and the first enemy that you come across.

Cannon - fires an impact-detonation explosive on an arc; you are not harmed by the splash damage. Very effective, and can be found rather early.
ACQUIRED FROM: 'Mortar', a relatively easy enemy that fires arcing shots with a very small blast radius.

Rocket launcher - exactly what it says on the tin; like the cannon, you aren't harmed by you own rockets.
ACQUIRED FROM: 'Pyramid', one of the first annoying enemies you meet - fires a hitscan laser while standing still, then pauses before moving to another location. Royal pain in the ass if you're dealing with other enemies at the same time.

Scattergun: fires a shotgun-like blast of rather lethal rounds which bounce - requires a lot of skill, but is potentially the one of the most deadly weapons.
ACQUIRED FROM: 'Bouncer', a box that ricochets around the arena. Not too much of a threat, but a pain in the ass to hit with some weapons (including its own, oddly enough).

Column gun: an incredibly lethal weapon (which only holds a few shots, so use it wisely) which causes the floor beneath the target area to rocket upwards and slam into the ceiling. Very awesome, and instant death for all but bosses.
ACQUIRED FROM: 'Rolling pin', an interesting enemy that rolls around semi-randomly following the grid (it cannot move diagonally), causing the floor beneath it to move upwards.

Vacuum: one of the most interesting weapons, the vacuum sucks up enemies and transforms them into health. Handy, easy to aim, and a general life-saver.
ACQUIRED FROM: Not associated with any particular enemy; randomly drops from defeated foes.

Vox Imperium

"Pulse" based multiplayer strategy game. Has similarities to Civilization. Turns pass in "pulses", which happen at different intervals depending on the game. There's also a map editor. It's browser based, but you have to register. You only need to put in a username and password, though. Pretty fun, I suggest you try it out. When creating an account, you can say who referred you. If you feel like it, put "Bukkaroo" in there. Only 2 o's because I forgot my old password

Has anyone heard of Star Control 2? This game has received many excellent reviews, some even going so far as saying one of the best PC games ever made. Having seen a lot of the game from various sources, I will say that it is indeed a well thought out game with lots to do and lots of enjoyment.

It was ported to the 3DO and got some musical changes and speech. The source code was released to the general public and a group of programmers decided to make their own PC port based on this code. The real version is abandonware so they use mainly the 3DO material.

This port is named: The Ur-Quan Masters at beta 0.6.2. According to them, the game is completely playable but lacks some custom features they want to add.

Besides the main site, there is a Wiki and forum dedicated to the port and Star Control 2 in general.

Another recreation that currently has only Super Melee but is greatly enhanced is Star Control Timewarp

Does anyone remember a dos game where you control 3 different guys, each with different guns, in an over head shoot em up game, I can't remember the name of it anymore.

It was originally on the Night owl BBS. (A long long time ago).

It was for DOS.

Anyone remember the name/own it?

I can't really remember much more than that.

You controlled all three guys at once.

(It was meant for three players, but, you could do it with 1.)

hmmm... Kioku, I'm not sure what game that is, but that makes me think that we should have a thread for games you can't remember the names of.

Hm. The ONLY game that sound like this that I've played is Blast Doors. But that one was turn-based. Here it is, anyway.

Hm, 3 different guys. I dunno if it's a shoot em up but I remember a game called Commandos when you mention that.

It's been a while since someone dropped a game or two in here, so...

The Elder Scrolls: Arena
The first Elder Scrolls game ever (outside of, apparently, a custom setting for D&D which inspired it). Primitive? Yes. But it's classic, and wasn't too bad for the time.

The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall
Probably one of the most wide-open games ever made... and I mean that! With semi-random content generation (random quests, too), a HUGE amount of explorable land, and lots and LOTS of things to do, you'll be hard-pressed to find a longer game. Make sure to apply the newest patch, however... and even then, this game has a lot of bugs, so save often.

Both can be downloaded here.

To get these things running, you'll need DOSbox... and these instructions, courtesy of the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages wiki:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/General:Playing_DOS_Installments_under_DOSBox

(Note: In code tags because part of it it was being recognized as an emoticon)

Here is a shmup in progress from well-known Fraxy player and boss maker, Eboshidori and friends called FINAL BOSS.

It is made in GM6 and is very well done for being a demo. The concept is simple. You are fighting against a vast enemy fleet in order to eventually become worthy of being called... a Final Boss.

You start out with a front gun that acts very similar to the main shot from Ikaruga. As you destroy bosses, you have the option to gain new weapons to use in your quest. Be sure to choose wisely as you can only get one per boss.

The game has a few tributes to other classic shmups and it is a treat to see all the blatant and subtle ones. See how many you can find!

Also, there are secrets within the game (although I personally haven't found any yet...) to give better incentive for completing the demo.

Download FINAL BOSS

YouTube Video

---

There have been shmups that have been revolutionary, such as RayForce, Ikaruga, Gradius, R-Type, Xevious, Space Invaders, and so on, but no shmup I know of has dealt with evolution quite like this little gem.

Genetos is a shmup that takes a different approach to the standard affair. It goes through the evolution of shmup styles starting with Space Invaders and going through to evolution of life itself. It is done very well and the style and flow are quite refreshing.

The weapon system is interesting as well. As your ship changes, your weapons can also change if you meet certain criteria. There are three types of weapons the ship can use, provided the ship is at the appropriate level. They are the main shot, bomb, and secondary shot with the defaults being Normal, Circle, and Laser respectively. Once you get a new weapon, it is unlocked for use in Free Play mode via the History area.

You can get Genetos here: Download Genetos

StepMania still continues to breathe life after all of these years, if you're big on music games, specifically DDR. Lot of packs are circulated and are still being developed.

I'm still making them after about six years at least...

That's a more advanced course but there are easier steps for that song...as well as the other hundred or two I've done over that course of time.

Tasty Static

Not as weird as it sounds. Tasty Static is a freeware successor to Skyroads; your mission is... well, to pilot your vehicle down roads floating in an endless void. And dodging obstacles along the way. Better than it sounds, and much HARDER than it sounds.

Time for more freeware shmup love!

Galactic Arms Race - I talked about this one in the Fraxy section, so this will be a more general description. Essentially this game is an experiment on artificial evolutionary concepts. The game itself generates new weapon patterns to use based on which of the current weapons you use and also if you keep or sell any new ones. Over successive evolutions, the new weapons will change to more of what you would prefer to use. It's an innovative concept and worth checking out.

Xeno Fighters EX-R - Do you remember the Raiden Fighters games? Well this game takes that idea and adds much more. Boasting an impressive amount of fighters to use from all spectrum of shmups, you are sure to get your fill of the love. It's not complete yet, but the beta that's available has a lot of stuff. There is also a Wiki for it: Xeno Fighters EX-R Wiki

Yeah, it's free now. (As well as the first two sequels)

I highly recommend playing at least the first one, it's a cool (if slightly dated) game.

It isn't exactly downloadable, but you need to download the Unity3D player so...

http://paradisepaintball.cmune.com/

It is a free FPS for Mac or Windows (not sure about Linux).
