I rarely use people's names, because I rarely talk about, or to, specific "other people". But if I do, I don't usually use abbreviations, or other things, I mostly just go by their screenname. But the most common thing for me, I think, is to not use any names at all, for whatever reason.

You guys actually have surprised me. Most people apparently can't spell "Kasdarack" even when they're LOOKING AT IT!

Nice to not have to deal with idiots here.

As far as nicknames go... it really depends on the situation. My RL friends will occasionally call eachother by screen name in person... we ALWAYS call my friend Tim "Tricky." I know a few people who call me Kas more often than they call me Jon.

As far as me addressing someone online? It depends on how well I know them, I guess. Probably a bit of what I'm used to as well.

Around here I call Xk "Xk" because that's what I'm used to, even though I don't know him very well. I call Danielle "Dani" because she's my friend and it's cool to have a nickname for her. I usually refer to Tarale as Taryn because I really like that name and she doesn't seem to mind.
On the board I'd probably refer to Tommathy by said screen name so everyone would know who I'm talking about, but I call him Tommy when chatting with him.

*shrugs* Like I said, it all depends on the situation.

Most people I know in person either refer to me as Joe or SJ(actually 2 variations on what it means) online, most of the people I know from the web either call me setz, setzer or Skiff, depending on how long they've known me.

As for other people, I'll call them by their name if I know them in person, in IRC I'll either use tab completion or abbreviate your nick depending on my mood.

I would never call Danielle Dani, even though its easier to spell. Dani traumatized me as a child by smacking me repeatedly with a clipboard.

Oh, and "mistah_j" as "mistah_gay"

This has always mystified me as well. How can you constantly misspell a name that's staring you in the eyeballs?

The name might be staring at your eyeballs, but your eyeballs might not be staring the name in it's letters.. Err, I think simply people just aren't paying attention.

If I know you in real life... I'll use your name. Otherwise that's just... creepy. I'll use the original full screename.

Depends on how they want me to refer to them. If they prefer their first name, i'll use that. If they prefer their alias, i'll use that.

I usually don't care though if people call me by my real name or not.

People calling me by my real name online sounds really weird to me, and I tend to assume they're talking about someone else.

I don't think anyone online (except people who I know from my life) knows my real name. Unless I've let it slip somewhere along the way, which I doubt.

Katelyn knows my name, and I think I posted it once at a previous incarnation.

Peh, it's Anthony. The A, first N, and H are NOT optional.

Hm...

- If you use your real name as your screenname, it's a moot point.
- If everyone knows your real name and knows you better by it than your actual screenname, then I'll use that. (Examples: Ashley instead of YoshiDude, Taryn instead of Tarale, etc.)
- If it's EASIER to use your screenname than your full name or if it just feels right after so many years... then I'll do that. (Examples: Hiryuu instead of T.J. (come on, I have to hold down Shift twice there!), Xkeeper instead of *shot*)

Otherwise, I'm just using your screenname or a variation of it.

What? My actual name ("Alex") is much easier to type than "Xkeeper". 43% less typing involved.

Maybe "Xkeeper" falls into the "feels right" category? Probably more people think of you as Xkeeper than Alex. Tarale used to have her first name in her username, and YD made a huge deal about her real name at some point as I recall.
