In the world of the Internet, there are several ways you can refer to a particular person, including their real name, screen name, AIM or other messenger name, etc. How do you generally refer to people online?

I almost always call people by their full, unabbreviated screen name, but I will sometimes adopt common abbreviations (like Xk for Xkeeper) in real-time discussions. I always preserve the original capitalization even at the beginning of a sentence. (E.g., if I were to start a sentence with (say) blackhole89's username, the b would still be lowercase). I also call Katelyn by her first name for some reason...probably because a while back, she would change usernames every week. I don't call anyone else by their first name unless it is also their username. On AIM, if it's someone I know from a board I will usually use their board name rather than their AIM name, probably because AIM names tend to be long and I associate most people more by their board name.

I haven't seen too many people get my username wrong, although I'd expect to see a few "Kernel"s because that is the usual spelling of the word. My old usernames, people always got wrong. Most people understood that Banedon started with B and contained at least one N and possibly a D, and some people also knew that the second letter was A, but that was all I could count on. So I'd get Bandeon A LOT, Banadon, Badenon, Brandon (a common first name in the USA), Banedone, and some people thought it was hilarious to call me by a variation of "banned". comm128 looked really dumb as Comm128 or just comm, so of course people would call me those things to annoy me.

Hmm..
I think I'm pretty much exactly like you on the subject. I don't care much for using real names on the internet, though there are some very rare exceptions where I will, if I've known the person for a long time and have a reason to do so..

Flowchart:
Does user use real name for screen name (e.g., jeff)?
Does user have a common nickname (e.g., Ace)?
Does user have a common abbreviated version (e.g., BMF)?
Otherwise, use full screenname.

Of course, this doesn't prevent me from being a little, uh... free-using with the names I call people (e.g., Ailure -> Furfa)

I normally just call people by an abbreviated nickname... or if that isnt available, then their full nickname.

But most of the time, I wind up with nicknames of my own

Some I use online names for...some I'm close enough to be on a name-to-name basis with so I would use their real names. Others I know in person first and then carried it over to online, and use their real name typically there too (good example: IggyKoopa who I knew about a year or two before he came here, we are on a first name basis of course)

Depends on the person or situation I guess.

I usually use abbreviated versions of names, and nicknames for the people that I'm close with. For example, I started calling KATW "Kattwah."

For people that I don't know well enough to make nicknames for, I just use the name they go by.

In IRC, I use the lovely first letter + tab feature, so the name looks very professional most of the time. I'm not like that if you catch me on AIM ;D

I tend to refer to people with full nicknames except for some cases (ex: Ace, Xk, BMF). Also, I appear to have the tendency to keep referring to people by the nickname I first met them under for a looong time (ex: MajinBlueDragon rather than Keitaro), and nick changes often confuse me.

Also, me and my few real-life friends address each other by internet nicknames for most parts.

Full nicknames for me as well.

I don't really care to abbreviate anything.

I usually call people by their full nicknames unless they have a name that can be shortened easily.

(Xk, blacky, Dani, you name it.)

You say that as if you'd never warm up to it

Quite a few people online call me Dani, but there's also the group of people that refuse to because they're still in denial about danicess.
I don't really care either way, I respond to either Dani or Danielle.

I don't use Dani but thats mostly because I can't really remember a time I've talked to Danielle ;x I don't know why that is either. Huh. I do tend to use Xk though (and as I recall quite a few people refered to me as MBD back in the dyas of...that name.)

If their name is short enough (5 letter or less), I'll go with the full name.
If their name has initials, I'll go with them (ex. JerryArr -> JR).
Then I'll try to shorten their name (Danielle -> Dani).

If any of those aren't good I'll think of something.

I use full nicknames unless they have an abbreviation. Although, I'm not sure if I do that or not because I hardly talk to anyone online directly.

[scratches back of head]

I'm kinda half and half on the names perspective on whether I'd want to call them by their screen/nick or actual name. Normally, when I start getting used to talking to anyone, I'd rather go by their actual...but the only time I actually need to use that is if I'm strongly making a point; I rarely if ever say someone's name unless it's in IRC/board anyways. On IM...well...I already know who I'm talking to so I don't necessarily have to single any one person out.

If it was real life, you better believe I'd be on first name basis.

Almost always the original nickname, unless I personally know the person or I'm close enough to them, then I'd use their actual name. There's only one name I occasionally abbreviate: Xkeeper to Xk. Unless the person's name is ridiculously long, I won't be abbreviating anything. There are a few people on AIM that I do not personally know. I don't ever mention or refer to them as their AIM username. Just either as "a friend", or, if I'm talking to that particular person, "you".

I'd never abbreviate Acmlm because, well, I say his whole nickname.
