I know that when a video is deleted, it's still online but not viewable.
Is there any possible way to retrieve deleted videos?

That doesn't allow to view the whole video, afaik. Only some screenshots of it, and its description and all...

My guess: when a video is deleted, it's deleted. It's like when a thread on a forum gets deleted.

but generally (here, at least. not quite sure about other fora), threads get closed and thrown into a trashcan subforum, not actually deleted. so I'm not sure if that's the best comparison

Generally, yeah.
But I recall having seen, not so far ago, spam threads (Happy Face) from some user, in trash. And now they aren't anymore in trash. There are also some posts of another spam user (RPM), that have been deleted. In those cases, you can't recover them.

my guess is that they were moved to another "trash can", just one you can't see

Ah. Reminds me of nice software pieces that can recover files you deleted 'irreversibly' (trashed then hit Delete key again). You're right. Even in real life, there are always 'other trash cans' for garbage (before they get burnt of course ).

But hey, we're getting offtopic

Yes, very very unlikely to recover deleted videos from YouTube, even if they just put them in a pending deletion group.

As for those software solutions, there isn't so much another "trash can", the files merely get removed from a table or marked as free under most filesystems. There are some neat filesystems, though, that'll keep incremental backups of any change, so if there's a problem or a mistake, you can roll it back.
