Much like the Master Quest version of OoT, the dungeons have been rearranged, and baddies are much harder. However, if you've played ALttP as much as I have, it's not too terribly difficult.

I'm just looking for some beta testers at this time to make sure a patched rom works as well as the main hack. There is a problem with the naming screen, but that seems to be the only problem and it doesn't prevent you from starting a quest. In other words, the naming screen still works, you just can't see what you’re doing.

In order for the patch to work, you must remove your roms header if it has one. This is because the rom I hacked also lacks a header. This can be done easily with snestool. With these two issues noted, the beta testers will get a prepatched rom, and an srm file allowing you to bypass the naming screen.

Other issues are mainly aesthetic. I wasn’t able to add “Master Quest” to the title because I made the mistake of hacking the rom without a header (although it still wouldn’t show up correctly in a headered rom). The “Zelda” text IS blue however. And finally, the dungeon maps will not tell you where the big chests are. The dungeon map editor in Hyrule Magic appears to be too limited.

Btw, this project is in not related to Moulinoski's hack. I have been working on this project off and on since July 2005. This hack is a complete reboot of my previous project however. Unlike my first attempt which only took a couple of weeks to make, I carefully mapped out what I was going to do before I even started hacking this rom. The first one was also a bad dump, and I couldn't make a successful ips out of it.

So if you're interested in beta testing, please let me know. I will probably choose 4 people. Once the beta testers are finished, I will release the hack.

I'd quite happily beta test, being the Zelda nut I am, with the added experience of many, many hours spent on Hyrule Magic. A 'master quest' hack was always something I'd been planning on working on, but never had the time to, unfortunately.

Anyway. More screenies would be nice, just to give us all a bit more of an idea. Maybe some shots of a couple of dungeon rooms so we can see how much is changed?

Yeah I can do that. I suppose it's only fair if I want people to play my hack, lol. I just wasn't sure what screen shots to use because like OoT Master Quest the dungeons essentially look the same with everything rearranged with harder baddies and more difficult tasks. I think I know what I can show off now that you mention it however.

Edit: I've uploaded 3 screen shots. I was careful not to spoil much so these aren't the most interesting screens, but they give you an idea of what this hack is like assuming you've played Zelda 3 enough to notice.

JamesBrad277, do you still need beta testers?

I'm new on this board, but I've beaten the original ALLttP, and I've always wanted to see a Master Quest hack.

If I could help you test, that would be awesome!

Thanks!

I got your PM!

Thanks!

Glad I can help!

First thing I noticed: I'm impressed with the modified title screen!

So many ALttP hacks (Parallel Worlds, Shards of Might, Moulinoski's hack(?)) have messed up title screens in any emulator (and on actual SNES hardware!) other than ZSNES.

I wish I knew a way to fix the naming screen. A lot of ALttP hacks seem to have that problem as well.

Thanks again!

I'll post or PM (to avoid spoilers!) if I run into any problems!

Edit: I've heard there's another ALttP editor besides Hyrule Magic: Black Magic .

It's in alpha/beta now, but it might be something to keep an eye on.

Edit2: (This might be the "switch door" thing you were talking about. I wasn't sure.) There's some kind of "door priority" issue with one of the doors in dungeon 1. Usually, when Link passes through a door that is "closed" on the other side, the door closes just after Link passes through. In this case, Link passes through a closed door that then appears to close again behind him. I don't know if this is an issue with Hyrule Magic or something you can fix. (SNES9X 1.51, I'll test on ZSNES 1.51 too later).

Edit3: I beat the first dungeon! I like what you've done so far, and I didn't see any other problems. It fits with the "Master Quest" idea. Great job!

Well mine would most likely have the same problem if I added the “Master Quest” text to the title. I didn’t because it wouldn’t even show up correctly in zsnes, lol.

I wish I knew a way to fix the naming screen. A lot of ALttP hacks seem to have that problem as well.

I would need to know how to use a hex editor in order to fix it. I assume I would have to compare the hex values from the original rom with the hacked rom pertaining to the naming screen and fix the ones that have changed, but I don’t know how to look for them.

I've heard there's another ALttP editor besides Hyrule Magic: Black Magic .

That does look promising. Although I would probably have to start from scratch if I use it (which I’d be fine with). I can’t imagine it would work well with a rom that’s been corrupted by Hyrule Magic. I just hope he makes it an open source editor if he gets tired of programming it. I’d hate to see it suffer the same fate as Hyrule Magic.

Yeah that’s the switch door thing. I probably should have been more specific.

I’m glad your enjoying it, and that everything is working so far. That makes me very happy!

I know I'm very late to attend, but could I beta test? I'm a huge Zelda nut, and next to Link's Awakening, ALttP is my favorite Zelda game. As a child it was so difficult and I felt really accomplished when I finally conquered it, 100% run without a guide. XD

I'm just wondering if the Chris Houlihan room is still in the game... hmmm. XD
