So the NASA press conference that was discussed on IRC a couple of days ago... it was the arsenic thing indeed. Not little green men, but still quite an interesting find.

Yeah, I saw another article on what I guess is the same thing earlier today, thanks to Butterflies and Wheels: Arsenic-munching germ redefines "life as we know it"

Insert Spock joke image here.

I theorized for a moment that the arsenic bacterium would be totally unrelated to other life, but seeing how they can apparently live of phosphor as well... apparently not.

No ET, but it's a nobel prize worthy find.

Edit: Branching it into it's own thread...

What about the funding-munching germ which is the unwillingness of the masses to address space head-on?

I think he was referring to the lack of funding NASA receives nowadays.

So, Assange has been arrested, 4chan has joined the fray to a degree (measured in news mentions) that might well irreversibly engrave them as the gun of the anarchist elements of the internet in the mainstream consciousness - how come we still aren't talking about the Wikileaks stuff anywhere?

On that matter, I think this is a decent article.

There are both pro-wikileaks and anti-wikileaks DDoS'ing all over the net. It's kind of hilarious yet annoying at the same time. I know for fact that it didn't take too long from the Swedish PP mirroring Wikileaks, until they got hit by DDoS too.

Most media I stumble across is very pro-wikileaks, it's mostly some media sources in USA and politicians who have problems with it (and surprisingly, Fox News isn't putting a huge anti-wikileaks slant as I thought they would, but then again they don't like the current head of state). And those politicians tend to be the ones in power, while the pro-wikileaks politicians usually aren't... go figure. Maybe they got something to hide.

In Germany, most media except for Spiegel (which Wikileaks more or less forced to be on their side by having them break the story) are severely anti-Wikileaks, be it due to the usual kowtowing to authorities or that typically German "Imagine a world without government control on what media can say! Your neighbour could put your medical records online or even write totally nasty and wrong things about you and you couldn't even stop them! Horrible, isn't it?" reaction.

And your neighbor would get these medical records in the first place, how? From the media? Where would the media get your medical records from?

"Jaaa ve are from Der Spiegel und ve vould laik to publish some medical records, Doktor."
"Zese medical records... are zey yours?"
"Nein, zey are Herr Soloviev's. Information wants to be free!"
"Zese medical records do not conzern you. I am under no obligation to break policy und give zem to you. If zey were -your- records, however..."
"INFORMATION WANTS TO BE FREE!"
"You do not need to know ze status of Herr Soloviev's bladder! Get out of my hospital!"

Well, personal data is Germany's terrorists and child pornographers. Mention it and all reason will be suspended.

On that matter, apparently, the office of the Vice President of Bolivia has started mirroring cables related to South America.

Well a lot of people already poked fun at the fact at how people should have nothing to hide, yet as soon anything from the goverments leaks out... :|

Well, I suppose the conservative argument for that goes along the lines of "the governments have the people's mandate to keep secrets and work for our good, which may include being able to inspect individuals to every degree they deem necessary to prevent harm to others".

That would be half-convincing if governements had a good chunk of precedents on their transparency account...

There ARE situations where a governement would NEED to keep stuff secret (at least temporarily), but those situations are very specific, it's not run-of-the-mill stuff...

Why do they call it "cables" ?
It's only paper or electronic stuff, there is no rope involved...
