I don't believe the two are connected, but every so often the aoi and kuroi get out of sync or something and the majority of people disconnect. I survived it |3

Most of time, you can just connect to nucleus.kafuka.org, it makes the process easier as you only have to bother about one domain and it almost always works. In very rare cases tho, you have to connect to either of aoi or kuroi.

Also, why do we need two servers? That feels fucked up to me...

kuroi.irc.djbouche.net == nucleus.kafuka.org
Kuroi and board2 are on the same server.
Aoi+services are on a different server run by DJBouche.
Kuroi and Aoi/services link together to form djbnet.
There used to be 4 or so other servers linked in to djbnet as well, but they just sort of died off and the ops that ran them just vanished, more or less.

Why would they do that? With just one server, anything that hits it brings down IRC entirely. Actually, most IRC networks have many more servers than just 2.

Hm, I see. Good point you got there.

I used to think nucleus.kafuka.org automatically connects you to the right server because the board's IRC applet connects to it (and gives no other choice), but well, is that actually true?

No; in theory, if anything does that, irc.djbouche.net (without additional qualifiers) should. I'm not sure if Bouche set up anything of the kind though; a larger-scale network would probably have something that tries to allocate users by geographic proximity and load.

Hm, okay, but then, I guess the board's IRC applet should link to irc.djbouche.net if it does redirect users right, that'd be more smart...

I guess I should also set my IRC client to connect to irc.djbouche.net, too, eventually...
