I don't understand why 4chan is so amazing to everyone.
I have trouble understanding how some of these memes are even funny or make sense.

To me, it's like a form of conformity in the internet, really.
There is plenty of funny things on the internet, but I guess anything on 4chan is automatically funny because it somehow got a reputation like that.

But in the long run, is it really? How did stuff like pedobear honestly come to be known?
What's so funny about it? Why not pedodog, or pedoelephant? What makes a pedophile and a bear being combined into one, so funny?
If it was made by some guy OUTSIDE of 4chan, no one would give a crap really. There are plenty of more funny stuff outside of 4chan. Why is it 4chan who sets the standards of what's funny and what's not on the internet?
Why are so many memes forced and not funny?

I admit there are some funny stuff now and then, but some are just stupid as hell.
Anyways, this is what I have to say about all of this.

Tell me what you think about my opinion, what you think about 4chan/ED/whatever itself.

I dunno, there's a huge amount of memes and I find some of them funny to some degree. Personally I have a strong distaste for 4chan itself, though.

You know, I thought about pedobear a while and dug this up. That site even disses 4 chan a bit, the site makes me laugh cause I'm like WTF this is famous and has a cult following?

I think the dog would be funnier since a dog loves to hump a lot, I'd prolly draw one up... ^^;

But I hear what you're sayin' though, if it ain't 4 chan approved it ain't funny.

For one, the whole pedobear thing stems from a misinterpretation of a 2ch ShiftJIS art character, who, in 2ch canon, just likes "nature" (with "nature" including everything from trees over °Д°-faced bushes to little girls; the latter being displayed in some imagery caused the misunderstanding).

Then, apart from the whole inside jokes being used to subtly identify as a member of a subculture thing, while this might seem like a somewhat cynical observation, repetition can make things funny - and, in nerdy mindset, very often does. I can only speculate as to why that is the case, but I observed largely the same kind of humour emerging in the social environment of mathematical olympiads, nerdier peer groups in my (specialized in maths and science) school and other places on the internet long before 4chan even existed. Even nowadays, it's a phenomenon not at all confined to 4chan and its sympathizers; consider, for instance, various Jul people's use of Jul smiley codes. Memes that are completely devoid of meaning don't go on to live for a long time, either; rather productive ones (like the well-used CD-i Zelda game quotes) typically profit from not only being used all the time and immediately recognized among the target group but also being "surprisingly fitting" or adopting previously unseen double meanings in certain contexts.
Then, I also think that a certain basic desire to make opaque allusions that will only be understandable to other people who hold a certain kind of qualification or belong to a certain social group - a desire to separate the rest of the world into an "in-group" and an "out-group" while communicating, so to speak - is inherent to mankind, or at least a certain strain of it. Ever-changing social slang evidences for that, barrages of intertextual allusions in higher-class literature does all the more so and I think it's only fair to assume that memes are the replacement for that in an internet where no other common cultural basis can be assumed with those one would like to address.

I was actually going to say a paraphrase of this earlier, but I didn't have the time then. I think you hit it exactly on the head: it's more about being part of the "secret internet clubhouse" than it is about actual humor.

4chan is awesome, and all memes are funny.

...

What, did you think I was being sarcastic?

If you aren't then that's sad.

If you managed to quote my post and still think I was being serious, then that's even sadder.

At the same time, I don't think it's just about "heheh, I get this and people who aren't part of my secret internet clubhouse don't". It's more obvious with the mentioned cross-references in literature, but I think that "getting" an obscure reference, on a certain level, yields the same positive feedback solving a riddle or mathematical problem does.

Then, I was trying to make a point out of repetition actually having the capability of making things funny. I can't quite pinpoint the mechanism that leads to that, but looking, for instance, at the quite popular technique of introducing "running gags", it seems to be fairly widely recognized.

And then there's logic tricks like how Milhouse is not a meme, but "Milhouse is not a meme" is a meme. I broke my friends with that one.

Ofcourse,

If you find ear-raping clips of Eggman saying PINGAS over and over at different pitches amusing, it is rather hypocritical of you to complain about 4chan's memes. None of what I've seen on Youtube so far was any better.
