Just so that it possibly reduces ambiguity. There was a time when you only had a single name, and if someone else had that same name, you'd be formally addressed as "Christopher son of George" to avoid confusion. But then surnames came on, usually based on occupation... and I'm not sure when middle names caught on.

Anyhow, my name is Michael Ryan Swanson. with only a swap of my names, I could've been RMS!
