Sukasa changed your post. You should complain to me about it, as I have the same powerlevel as him and can bring stuff up about it.

Getting back on topic...

I generally prefer retro games, primarily shmups. The primary reason I feel this way is that there is usually more or equal emphasis on creativity compared to graphics. Nowadays, a good number of games sacrifice playability in order to boost the graphics and make it look nice.

As I look back on some of the better older games, I find that generally a lot of thought and effort was put into them in order to make them enjoyable, most likely to offset the lack of graphical content. Using 8-bit shump examples, look at Recca (NES), Nemesis 2, 3 and Salamander (MSX), Guardian Legend (NES), and Zanac (NES). The balance is in 16-bit, with the classic examples of Mario, Sonic, LTTP, and a good number of shmups.

Retro games aren't exactly the best. Sure, they're good, but they're quite inferior to what we can do now, even if companies are squandering away their time making Grizzled Space Marine, Grey World CLXVI. Especially since games as wonderfully unique as Left 4 Dead or Portal would be utter shit as a retro game (case in point: Portal Flash Game). Retro Games need not be put on the spot so much. Companies think that people want remakes of retro games, but the fans whine when they put out too many. And when they put out too many new games, the fans whine and complain that the companies aren't doing anything for the classics.

To quote Yahtzee, "Fans are clingy, complaining dipshits, who will never ever be grateful for any concession you make. The moment you shut out their shrill tremulous voices the happier you'l be for it."

The fans will always pander for something new that sticks to the image they know and love, and it has to be absolutely perfect or the they will begrdugingly turn their snooty noses up at it or just get used to it.

Look at the Zelda fanbase. Ocarina of Time is their 'all time best game ever' and they won't shut up about it. Every time a game deviates from the formula in the slightest they turn their nose up at it. When leaks of Wind Waker came out they slapped Ninty in the face, complaining about how Link looked too cartoony, but eventually they warmed up to it because it was just as good and well-detailed, if not better, than Ocarina of Time.

tl;dr It's all too often that fans cling to series but also want something new from a series, but when it deviates too far, they whine and complain until they realize it's just as good.

Retro, HD is overrated and it sucks, I dont see anything "cool" about HD, N64 gfx is enough for me, as long gameplay and controls are good

Retro, although I do play a fair amount of new games now.

I enjoy older graphics, 8bit, N64, etc. etc. as much as I enjoy the newer ones.

Graphics are overrated...who wants to play a game, even if it has the greatest graphics of all time, if it's incredibly difficult, incredibly horrendous controls, and just plain bad?

Well... neither. There weren't any more or less good games years ago than there are now (that I know of). Although I guess generally I'd rather play a newer game; graphics aren't everything but they still count!

I agree.

There's good games now, and there's crap games now.

There's good games in the past, and there's crap games in the past

Many people who stick with retro only rarely gives the newer games a chance, or is simple too lazy to learn the newer games.

CyclopsCavemen: I probably would enjoy Wind Waker more if it wasn't for the repetitive boat traveling. I'd enjoyed it's dungeon parts, and should probably try to get around replaying it sometime. I enjoyed Twilight Princess more, but only because it actually didn't have a timesink mechanic.

Retro Games for lifespan, New games for ways to play.

No More Heroes was a great Wii title, although it was a bit on the short side.

Older games provided a longer base lifespan. Legend of Zelda: LTTP took me a fair few days to complete for example. Something like Wind Waker, I could probably finish in a 24 hour run.. sadly.

I like Retro games better not really cause they're retro, just cause I like them. It doesn't really matter to me whether a game has good graphics or not. And I still play New games, even though I often prefer to play Retro ones.

I typically go for retro because they're what made gaming what it is (That and with emulation the only space you're taking up is data instead of boxes of old cartridges).

I can't really afford to drop $60 on a new game, or $200 for a console, so my newest console is PS2 with mainly older titles that I could pick up for ~$5-10. Although I do have a DS Lite for my most up-to-date hand held.

Case in point: I'm a retro kind of guy, both for nostalgia and budget limit.

Team Fortress 2 is probably the game I put the most hours ever into, and it's from 2007. Usually newer games get's their lifespan with being multiplayer, but still.

This is even dumber than the childish "Star Wars versus Star Trek" debate (which, thankfully, most people grow out of when they grow older... or they just dislike both equally).

Unless the only new games you count are on the Wii, the crap-to-good game ratio hasn't really changed since 1985 (though there was even more crap earlier than that... the cause of the video game crash). I enjoy both old and new games; my favorite game of all time is Doom, and it's not because it's from 1993, but because it's damn fun. I like Wesnoth, I like Portal, I like quite a few other new games just as much as I enjoy Doom, Nethack, or SMB3.

Not too fond of these newfangled games, with their 11 buttons, and analog sticks...
Seriously, though; Donkey Kong Country and games like that were easy to pick up and play, yet still challenging enough to keep you busy.

Now, I have to worry about shit like watching enemy fire, ordering my troops to split up into two squads and enter the building to secure the target, or whatever it is these games have you do nowadays; I can barely tell anymore.

Then again, I do like Dynasty Warriors and games like that, since I only have to worry about a few buttons. I know; say what you will. I have remember enough crap in real life to try to remember what happens if I press the Right Trigger while holding down select, or whatever.

In summation, I like games that are and very fun, and not overly complicated.

You're playing the wrong sort of games for you.

Also, who cares? Good games will always triumph... or, at least, memorable games.
