Getting back on topic...
I generally prefer retro games, primarily shmups. The primary reason I feel this way is that there is usually more or equal emphasis on creativity compared to graphics. Nowadays, a good number of games sacrifice playability in order to boost the graphics and make it look nice.
As I look back on some of the better older games, I find that generally a lot of thought and effort was put into them in order to make them enjoyable, most likely to offset the lack of graphical content. Using 8-bit shump examples, look at Recca (NES), Nemesis 2, 3 and Salamander (MSX), Guardian Legend (NES), and Zanac (NES). The balance is in 16-bit, with the classic examples of Mario, Sonic, LTTP, and a good number of shmups.
