The Aztecs built them, and instead of using them to fight off foreign invaders (like Cortez...and a monsterous corporealization of Small Pox) they planted them and ordered them to lie and wait until a random, arbitrarily decided upon date when they would wake up and melt the planet.

Aztecs are dicks.

That is in no way the most reasonable. The most reasonable, is everyone forgets that the world is supposed to end, or maybe a few indian people kill themselves, everyone wakes up the next day, world goes on as usual.
