When do most often use "um" or "uh" or other little words? I tend to use when I'm nervous or something. During a book report, for instance.

What about you?

I generally use it as a filler between thoughts, so there isn't an audible pause when I'm speaking out loud. Those are real conversation killers. =P

I sometimes end my sentences with them just because I took too long to think and don't feel like carrying on the conversation. Also, if I speak a bit too fast for some reason, I'll use "uh" as brakes.

I don't just simply say "uh". I usually add some implausible hand movements to accompany the lonely "uh". It just makes things even weirder.

I use "um" roughly every five seconds in reality...

You should see my typing normally I do... er, eheh.

Okay, so I do use them often enough I actually pause when typing when I run out of a "blah buffer".

I honestly don't use them very often when typing.. except when I'm very unsure of something or find myself in an awkward situation. Same goes for my actual speech pattern too, I tend to get irritated at people so go "um" and "er" all the time as they talk.

Me... geez, I find it hard to form a coherent thought when speaking XD

Unless Im reading straight from a text, my words are littered with little time-stallers. Heck, even WHEN I read from text, a slight "err" slips in here and there

Generally speaking, "uh"s, "like"s, and the such occur when the rate of speaking is greater than the rate of thinking. Which would suggest that people should generally shut up.

I used to do that sort of thing alot, mainly when I didn't know what I was talking about but felt like talking anyways, these days I generally know what I'm talking about and therefore do not have to put fillers in my words unless I... um... forget a word or something

I tend to use "uh" or "um" when I can't find the right words for something, though I usually don't type it out when I'm talking on the internet. I also sometimes use it as a statement of speechlessness (which comes out in writing as "...", which I use way too much )

I use ellipses too much as well...I don't know why, I seem to have gotten into the habit of using them several years ago to indicate...like a trailing thought that isn't really finished. Hell, I don't even know what I mean by them anymore...

Does "meh" count? I use meh from time to time at the beginning of a sentence. As for "uh" and "um", I don't recall ever using those two that much in posts or anywhere else for that matter.

I think "meh" is different, it means more "I don't care" or "It doesn't matter". I used to use "bah" for that but switched to "peh" recently.

I do tend to start a lot of posts and sentences with a single word followed by a comma as in "Yeah", "Well", etc.

I tend to say "Uuuh" before answering questions.

...and whenever I can't find the right word, which is quite often.
(My brain thinks in both Swedish and English, and if I'm supposed to speak Swedish and my brain is currently working in "English-mode", there's usually a lot of words I have to translate from English to Swedish, decreasing the talking speed and increasing the amount of "Uuuh"s and "Uuuums".)

I use it to annoy people, and also to indicate I'm about to say some bad news.

I use Huh?, Fuh? or any other variations as a question or out of confusion. And other things which I can't remember at the moment right now, but eh. :/
