I've always preferred to believe that SMB2 actually took place. "It was all a dream!" is such a lame ending.
I see Subcon as kind of a parallel world that can only be accessed by Mushroom Kingdomers when they dream. Dreamers project themselves there and are able to interact with the landscape and inhabitants as if their physical bodies were there. If a dreaming Mushroom Kingdomer were to die while in Subcon, their physical sleeping body would probably die as well. An evil force conquered the native Subconians, but their cries drew Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad from their normal slumber into the land of Subcon. Were the four to talk about their experience the next morning, they'd discover that the same thing had happened to all of them. I'm not really sure what to make of Wart and his army. Are they also inhabitants of the land of Subcon, or has Wart somehow figured out how to project himself and armies of lackeys into the dream world? Maybe Wart has a room full of Shy Guys all drugged up to be permanently asleep. The Subconians that come out of the jar at the end of the game look a lot like Beezos, though, so I'm thinking the enemies of SMB2 are native Subconians that Wart, whoever he is, has managed to turn to his side. Maybe the dudes in the jar were the ruling elite of Subcon and Wart led an uprising in the general populace of Shy Guys, Snifits, and Ninjis. The Donkey Kong Country and Mario universe being connected by the sports titles makes my head hurt. Are Koopas and Kremlings two distinct races of reptillians both vying to conquer the same world? I want to see a game where Bowser and K. Rool are at war. |

As far as I'm concerned, "SMB2" is just a romhack of DDP that has Mario sprites. Nintendo should have just released DDP and SMB2J everywhere... |

Posted by Sgraff87Oh yeah, I actually have that comic! Haven't looked at it in years though. From that I'd have to agree with you. Plus, as for cowboys in the mushroom kingdom, there's an episode of the Super Mario Bros super show that has a western theme, so I'd say the mushroom kingdom is aware of cowboys, which further supports that Mario knew Wario when he was still in the Mushroom Kingdom. Now why would the Mushroom Kingdom know of cowboys? Simple, its not supposed to make sense and someone just thought it would be cute lol. Posted by KernalYeah, I pretty much think of it that way too. It just never really felt like a mario game to me, and it technically really isn't. Although I do like Icegoom's idea if you wanted to work it into a the back story. And to stay on the original topic which I know I've totally neglected, I knew Subcon was short fr subconscious since the day I first read the name in the game manual which was probably when I was around 6. And yes, I actually knew the word subconscious and knew it had something to do with dreams when I was 6. But that was just because I was into dreams. Posted by icegoomI pretty much regard everything with Donkey Kong to be totally separate from the Mario world. I sort of view it like this. Kongo Island is neither part of the "Real" world or the Mushroom Kingdom. It is wholly sepaerate. However, it is part of the same dimension as the Mushroom Kingdom, this dimension being "The Video Game Universe" as a whole. Think Captain N During the original Donkey Kongs where Mario was involved, (a.k.a Cranky's glory days) the original DK (a.k.a Cranky) was part of our world and thus just your simple average ape, albeit somewhat king kongish. Afterward, he was set loose into the jungle where somewhere he stumbled upon a portal into the Video Game Universe much as the Mario Bros stumbled upon a portal into Mushroom Kingdom. Now, Brooklyn intersects with Mushroom Kingdom so the Mario Bros portal pulled them into Mushroom Kingdom. But the jungle is no where near Brooklyn, so it pulled DK to a place nowhere near Mushroom Kingdom, a.k.a Kongo Island which happened to intersect with the jungle. Now since dumb DK is now in "The Videogame Universe" anything is possible. The island has a strange effect on him that slowly makes him more intelligent. Then the rest of the Donkey Kong time line occurs. Hmm, now this is reminding me of the Narnia books. Anyway, K.Rool wants to take over Kongo Island, Bowser wants to take over Mushroom Kingdom. That's the extent of their wanting to conquer. Both probably out of a continuing grudge against the respective heroes. I guess somewhere down the line DKs grandson ends up meeting up with Mario and makes amends for past grievances. As for the time thing, don't apes age differently from humans? I don't know about that though. |

Posted by blacknemesis13"Technically" no, but DDP was made by the SMB staff, and was heavily influenced by the Mario games (POW blocks, coins, Starman). The same team also handled the conversion to SMB2. I'm pretty sure Nintendo considers it canon, considering how its characters have been heavily integrated into the Mario universe.Posted by KernalYeah, I pretty much think of it that way too.
