[09:50:26] CaptainPicard> uh oh
[09:50:29] CaptainPicard> It seems the universe doesn't really like RHDN. We're with a different company now and still have horrible luck. This one is major. We were one of 4000 servers (in our parent company and it's subsidiaries alone) from the US to the UK affected by a recent widespread vulnerability in commonly used VPS host server software HyperVM.
[09:50:30] CaptainPicard> Crews have been working through the night to investigate and restore service. Many servers were found to have partial or full data loss. They're expecting service to return anytime between now and 48 hours due to the large number.
[09:50:30] CaptainPicard> Our server is being reported as one having suffered full data loss go figure, so it's uncertain to what level it will be restored, if any. If they don't restore any data at all, it's been awhile since I've downloaded a backup.

So that's another good reason to not use virtualized hosting... the machine you are on becomes a much more attractive target to various people with exploits than it would be if it contained just your feeble and meaningless existence.

It's good for scalability though... but that's about it really.

I think that it is more of a reason to make and keep backups at a location remote from the main server. If it is difficult to make backups regularly, the backup process should be automated.

My host uses a FreeBSD cluster, each user+site is contained in its own jail, it's actually even better than dedicated hosting with the flexibility and speed.

Do you think it's a coincidence that SMW Central is down too?

Bluntly speaking, yes. It just seems like the domain dropped and was bought up in their case.

edit:
- The head of the company that developed HyperVM hanged himself in his apartment.
- It seems to be a quite large-scale incident.

For anybody that wasn't aware, RHDN is back up and has been so for several days now.

Good job by the administration there, I'd say. (Google Cache? That sure must have been quite a bit of work...)

Are they still missing some files or has everything been recovered by now?

BH98: Perhaps they used a tool like Warrick that can automatically retrieve web sites from Google cache, The Wayback Machine, and similar services.
