Yes, just edit the player_01.bmp file in /img/ and change the graphics in there to whatever you want.

There is no player_01.bmp file, all I have is fpl files

You're in the wrong folder. You need to be in the "img" folder, not the "player" folder.

what could be even cooler than that would be if you could make a player ship in the editor, effectively making a boss-on-boss battle!
