Well, it's 11 days late, but I might as well. I haven't been to Acmlm's in the longest and I just realized that the old Acmlm's board is probably where I got the idea that maybe I was up for the task of retranslating this game after all. Probably.

Anyway, it's not entirely my work; this is d4s' German-language retranslation/enhancement patch, upgraded with a fresh new English script, numerous bugfixes and a few interface elements restored (you can buy stacks of items again! Hallelujah!). It's up to v1.1 as of the 7th; I'll probably roll a 1.1b out the door (still a couple of pesky bugs in there) sometime this coming week or two.

Get it from my website, or download it directly here.

Enjoy.

To be clear: What are the differences between the original and this? Trying to decide if it's worth playing through again.

A fresh new translation, written by yours truly, for starters.

"You know the routine...play all pitiful, get into their good graces, then rob 'em blind and run like hell?"

On d4s' side of things, there's a bunch of graphical tweaks: shiny new gradient text boxes, a proportional font, a dash button, and a brand-new intro sequence with a vocal song. (For those who don't care for "Owaranai Ai", the song from the Japanese BoF2 TV commercial, there are also two supplied "overpatches" that change the intro: one changes the song, the other removes the intro and restores the original title screen music.)

Translator's notes are also included. Overall, I've tried to match the nomenclature of the later, better-translated games (it should be noted that BoFV: Dragon Quarter had some references to this game, and my retranslation makes the connections more obvious). The script itself has been rewritten in a looser, more conversational style: contrary to popular belief, the only things missing from the old translation are a few T-rated jokes, but the script is so stilted and mechanical as to sap any enjoyment out of the reading.

Apparently board2 doesn't care too much about big translation projects....

Ryusui: maybe you should have told people it was a hack of SMW and leave them scratching their heads when they actually play it.

I don't think board2 cares that much about SMW hacks unless they have some really outstanding aspects.

As for Breath of Fire, I must say that listening to its music and not liking it has kept me from playing it so far (I use music as a criterion to decide whether a game is worth playing a lot). If everyone says it's worth it, I suppose I could give this a shot (though I still mostly prefer to at least add a self-educational effect into playing and go for the original Japanese version in such cases...).
