No... You don't beat Light Labs.

I believe I'm getting pretty close.

Ailure was doing that very thing to my buses...

And I haven't logged in for two days, so I don't know how I'm doing...

Also, Doritokiller, if you're basing progress off of the game's AI, don't. The AI does not build in any way close to how a human does, and a human would be doing a whole lot better than that.

I know that the AI sucks; I'm not basing it off of that. I just felt like having it there, to show my biggest "threat".

I'm almost at a company value of $10 million, anyway.

So, I guess this takes the place of "Natural Acmlm's Board Game"? Like how the RPG was s'posed to do it.

Uh...XK's company is currently at nearly $500 million. Even "my" company is at $22 million, and it was started late (heh).

By the way, XK's 5000 km/h choo-choo=win.

Yeah, I just went to spectate the game, and converted the currency to dollars.

... There goes my ego.

BUT. I'm still doing pretty good, considering that I just started on Saturday.

You should leave it on pounds, it's the way the game was designed.

Also, the company performance graph is the most important.

Doritokiller: I suggest playing a game without any AI. They will not contribute to your play style one bit. Get used to starting fast, and blowing most of your money on lucrative freight routes, such as long distance coal routes, and Farm-Factory routes. Then, you can diversify into other things, such a passenger trains/planes, small bus routes between close cities, and other things.

Once you've got your loan payed off, that's when you can be really creative. Complicated routes and beautiful designs make the game much more enjoyable.

Well I downloaded OpenTTD...now what? It's installed. I go ingame but what am I to actually do?

That was the problem I was having... there's really no set goal. I didn't really get into the game until I played online, where I made myself a goal of "get a high ranking".

Basically, you find two (or more) points and you connect them together with transport. That's pretty much it.

The best way to start out if your a newbie is to find a coal mine, and connect it to a power station, using a train. That will give you a regular source of income.

To do this, you first build a station next to the coal mine (don't worry if the station says "accepts: nothing", coal mines don't "accept" anything, they "give" it to you ). Try to build your stations with a minimum of 4 tiles, so your whole train will fit in the station at any given time.

Next, build another station next to the power station (This time, make sure it says "accepts: coal". It's fine if it accepts additional things too).

Then connect the two stations with railroad tracks. Diagonal tracks cannot go up/down hills... only straight tracks can.

After that, build a depot somewhere. It's a good idea to have more than one; I usually place one by each station. Don't place depots adjacent to diagonal track, as that tends to create tracks that turn at a 90 degree angle, which trains refuse to do.

Then, click on your depot, and click add new vehicles.

Select any engine you feel will suit this task. It's a good idea to go with a freight or a "freight or passengers" engine, and build it. A window should then pop up. This window is pretty much a viewport/control panel for that particular train. You can open this window at any time by clicking on your train. When it's in the depot, just click on the train engine in the list that comes up when you click on the depot.

Then you need to add some cargo carrying cars/hoppers. The amount you need depends on the amount the coal mine produces. Click on the coal mine and check the "production last month" value.

Now go to your train's window and click on the details button (it has a picture of a note with a folded corner).

Now click on total cargo. This list will show you the total amount of cargo your train is capable of carrying, and is currently carrying.

So go back to the vehicle building window, and find something that can transport coal, like a mineral hopper or something, and build it. Keep building this until your train can carry around the same amount of coal that the factory can produce. You won't get the exact number, most of the time, so don't worry about it, just get it close.

Look at the small number to the right of your train in the depot window. This is how "big" your train is. Take that number, divide it in half, and round it upwards to the next integer. So if the number is 5, divide it in half to 2.5, and then round *up* to 3. This number is how many tiles your station must be, in length, in order to fit your entire train. Always try to get your stations to fit the entire train. That's why I usually build with a minimum size of 4. If your train is smaller than the station, don't worry.

Once you're satisfied, you can close the windows, but keep the train's control panel window open, or reopen it if you've closed it.

Click on the orders button, which is the button above the details button. It should show an orange arrow pointing diagonally.

In the window that pops up, you will be setting the orders for the train to follow. In this case, click "goto", and then click the station next to the coal mine. Click on the item that pops up in the list, and then click "full load". This will make the train wait at the station until it is carrying the maximum amount of cargo it can carry.

Next, click "end of orders", so that this next order will appear underneath the first order. Click "goto", then click on the station next to the power station. Then click on the new item in the list, and click "unload". This will tell the train to unload all of its cargo. You can probably get away without telling the train to "unload", but it's generally a good idea for beginners.

Now your train should be ready! Close the windows and go back to the train's control panel. In its status bar, there should be a red flag on the left, and in the center, the word "stopped" in red. Click on this status bar. This is how you tell your train to "go". Clicking on it again will stop the train, and the train will do nothing until you tell it to go again.

The train should come out of the depot, and go to the first station on its list of orders, which should be the station next to the mine. If it's not, don't worry.

After the train loads up on coal, it should now take it over to the other station, next to the power station. When it arrives at the station, you should hear a cha-ching! and see your income appear. If you don't, check to make sure that the station accepts coal, by clicking on it. If it doesn't, you need to put the station closer to the power station.

So there you have it. A quick tutorial on how to build a train. This isn't limited to just coal and power stations, this works for anything. Forests and sawmills, oil and refineries, farms and factories, and lots more.

And I hadn't been much of a aggressive builder in that game...

C.A.T.S. eh? Light Labs, all your transports are belong to us.

But I blame the stupidity of the interface. It's not exactly intuitive. That and lack of sleep. I was telling them to go to the resources but I forgot to tell them to Load and Unload. XD

:EDIT: Curse you fuckers, this game is addicting. I'm still trying to get used to the other vehicles. I might just stick with the road vehicles.

Well, remember that Road vehicles is hardly the biggest income earner. Trains and Aircraft is.

Also I probably resume the current game in a few hours. Just waiting on a few americans and Canadians coming home from their jobs/school.

Is there any hack or workaround so vehicles last more than 15 years? Damn vehicles keep breaking down. You know that Greyhound doesn't replace every single bus every 15 years, so why should I be FORCED to?

And on the note of "other vehicles" I'm still adapting to thise game. It IS mostly trial & error.

Koitenshin: You can turn off breakdowns in the difficulty settings in game. You can even change it anytime in game. What version are you playing? And which, if any, NewGRFs are you using?

I'm using the latest stable release of OpenTTD. v0.5.0 I believe. And I'm not using any NewGRF's whatever those are. I happen to have the transport tycoon disk beside me. I used those. So classical style I guess.

On another note......how do I make my trains NOT CRASH into each other if I want two trains to run the same route?
