Terrible, right? I read about it in some shitty PC magazine at work. Geocities being down and out probably isn't the worst thing to ever grace humanity, but man did I ever love that place. It was home to some of the shittiest but coolest websites I'd ever seen. I'll miss it, just like I miss a lot of things online over the last 9 or 10 years. Another example is RM2K, man that program rocked tits. What sort of other things like this do you guys miss? Are there still dwindling fan clubs left? Post them here so I can nostalgia

Apparently since it's a important part of internet history An archive group is actually trying to save as large parts of geocities as possible before it goes down.

Gotta love the homepage fad at the end of the 90's which feel flat, and probably why sites like geocities became obsolete. Especially after the so called Web 2.0 era.

That would almost be a source of bragging rights, owning the single most useless zip file in existence...

One could always hash sections of the data & use it as a(n insecure) random number generator.

Aside from using GeoCities to build a small site for our final grade 9 Business class project, the only reason I've been using GeoCities even recently is for the file manager. GeoCities was one of the very few acceptable ways to submit files to RHDN, so that's the only reason I started to use it again. Their other two methods are Hostfile.org which at the time was considered unsafe by SiteAdvisor (although I checked yesterday and apparently it's okay now) and Google Page Creator which says they are apparently no longer accepting new registrations and I never registered with them to begin with. There's nothing in there that I don't already have, but I'm still a little upset about this. Like Arbe said as well, some of the sites on there were pretty neat.

Man, I think Geocities was one of the first things I used when I became a slave to the internet. I used it to make a crappy site that had one viewer- me. It had a nice and user-friendly interface, but I haven't seen it since I stopped using it in 2003. Too bad it's going down.

I had a homestead, first, in 1998 or 1999. Then a tripod in 2000-2001. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever used geocities. It has a lot of neat, little apps and games and things that aren't hosted anywhere else. It's good to see these wont be lost to eternity.
