I made a little game on my TI-83+ where you're a theta walking around collecting asterisks and plus signs and avoiding X's, trying to get to the E in each screen. I eventually gave up developing it because the TI programming language is so damn slow and I don't know ASM.

Everyone wants to make a game that they'll never have the skill to do.

I disagree. If people wanted to make that game bad enough they would apply themselves to learning how to make it. If you want something bad enough, you'll get it, but just sitting around wanting won't help.

I agree with this to an extent.. but sometimes it just isn't practical. You can envision something incredible, but even if you strive for it that doesn't automatically make it realistic a possibility.. It varies a lot from the idea and scope of the project, and in many cases you can achieve some kickass things if you work hard enough.. but not always.

Mind you I am a bit pessimistic by nature, so I guess I tend to shoot down things before properly applying myself to them.. but all the same, if the scope of the project is going to be broad and sophisticated, I don't like to kid myself into thinking I can do something all by myself in any feasible amount of time where it would normally take a team of talented people.. (And finding talent can be difficult, and as well, buying talent is expensive.. the best chance you'd have to have access to a fully functional team would be trying to get a job as a game developer probably, and generally it isn't realistic to suspect you'll ever rise in the ranks enough to push forward any actual game ideas.. just work on stuff other people give you.)

Again, I'm pessimistic.. But circumstance plays as much of a role as attitude and determination do. Though if more people actually did apply themselves, we might see more ready talent to make these projects more plausible to undertake.. I guess it is sort of a vicious circle of sorts.. Eh..

My forte just happens to be writing though, that's my talent really, I'm not sure I could push myself to learn programming or 3D modeling or what have you anyway.. as they aren't really my thing, and trying to work with them would probably frustrate me more than anything else.. it just wouldn't be practical in my circumstance to try it totally alone, and I don't really know anyone to help, and so on and so forth.. that's why I've pretty much given up on it and applied myself to just writing a book instead. Might as well get what I can out of it..

I'd make a game where you control a little space ship and fly around mazes and shoot stuff. I would have bonus levels, boss fights and different weapon types. as well as original graphics and sound.

Oh wait a sec...

Then after that, I would make a DKC type of platformer, but with Banjo-Kazooie. You would collect notes, and puzzle pieces, learn your moves from Bottles and of course fight Gruntilda and her minions.

More specifically, I want to be able to pull off that Interweaving Music effect that Banjo Kazooie and its sequel did.

You know, in the Castle Tower Hub, the same basic melody played in every area, but as you moved from, for example, the desert themed area, to the Winter land Area, xylophones and horns would replace oboes and violins in the music.

Ive always loved that music effect.

I'd tell them, but I don't want any of my ideas stolen.

The only thing I can really say is... "3rd person action platformer with Koopa Kids".

Paper Luigi or Paper Grodus for RPGs.

Or maybe a fighting game with 100+ characters. Meh...

I do have a game I want to make.
I intend to make it once I finish Super Metroid: Insanity. Redesign and Insanity have largely been a way for me to practice and learn how to make a game before I actually make what I finally want to make.

It would basically play like this: http://naha.cool.ne.jp/matatabiasobi/rw04.html

If I had the power to make games, the first one I would start develop would be...

Castlevania Online.

I understand where you're coming from, but I disagree. Maybe I'm a bit of an optimist, but I believe if it is truly something you desire to do you have the potential to succeed. Don't let the notion of being a one-man team deter you. Who knows, perhaps because of your determination on working on your project(s) you'll come across someone who would be willing to join your team. Besides, that is also why they have GameDev.net.

As for me, I have countless ideas for stories/games and (being optimistic) am going to accomplish them all (either by doing what I'm dreaming now or by recycling ideas). Yes, programming and whatnot is a bit difficult to learn, but once the concept is grasped it is quite easy actually; the only "hard" part is coming up with good logic (at least for me), breaking it down into chunks in order to program. I know the one-man team will be difficult, but I'm willing to go that route. Already I am able to compose music, write, and draw (well...I will actually consider myself an "artist" once I get a tablet...I hate drawing oldskool (LOL))... I just have to learn how to do programming well and (if necessary) 3D Modeling. Luckily, I'm majoring for a B.F.A. in Video Game Design, which will tackle those last three things for me. Though...I will say a team is VERY nice. I do have help from my nephew with a few of the projects, so that helps... All I have to say is, don't give up on your dreams!

P.S. I don't know if I can help, but if you need help finding resources (tutorials and whatnot) on something related to Game Development, PM me and I'll do my best to assist you.

If I could make a game, it would force the gamer to think, and it would probably have a good deal of social constructs.

ITS A TRAP!

Sgraff is useing this thread to pull ideas for that Super Maria Sisters hack! I know it!!!

Nah I'm just kidding. I would love to do 3D modeling and level design, and I would really enjoy working with Sonic Team, trying my best to bring Sonic back to what it used to be (I'm telling you, THREE DEE SONIC THREE AND KAY REMIX) and possibly start new franchises (A problem with many developers these days, many stick with whats not broken and not make new things).

I wouldn't mind learning to program, but as I have said before, I need to be sat down and taught it becuase I get too distracted by tutorials and if I need to ask a question I cannot ask a .doc file how to do something.

But a game I would make would totally be Sonic, 2D, and on a next-gen console, but making up for the 2D with the best special effects possible and longer gametime possible! Fun level design, no camera problems, back to roots, and really long game. All what would be needed to just make one good Sonic game these days...

My never to be made fantasy game idea would be at it's basics a kind of modern time platformer that would be somewhat like modern Castlevanias in the way of having many weapons and being an RPG/Platformer type mix, but movement would be more advanced with flips or grabbing on edges, possibly some parkour/free running type techniqes or trickster things, for both asthetic value, to reach locations(like walljumps and backflips in Mario 64), and experience points. Weapons would have their own experience points, which would raise a small numer of levels depending on what could be done. Thus, the player starts out not knowing how, say, to properly use a knife, then using it more would make it go from random swings and stabs to proper and more powerful thrusts and cuts.

An urban mix of Castlevania, Mario 64, and Sonic Rush, you could say.

This is a pretty tough question for me, because I eventually want to make a career out of it but don't have many ideas. The main idea I have at this point is to make a game similar to the Morrowind and Oblivion games of RPG fame, with a couple extra features. I'd like to find a way to also allow randomly generated landscapes. Dungeons aren't hard (roguelikes mastered it decades ago) but I've yet to see a quality game with randomly generated 3d landscape, you know, hills and all. I'd make completely random game settings if I could; that part would be sorta like Daggerfall.

I also want to allow players to alter landscape, build stuff, etc. So, basically a combo of Oblivion and a 1-man Simcity. A coding nightmare if there ever was one. Actually, though, my main obstacle to making any game at all is that I'm a completely horrible artist. I had an extremely early beta using Dark Basic Professional at one point, but I stopped 'cause I paid $40 for more commands (plugins, whatever) and they wouldn't validate themselves. If I do continue with that idea, I'd be starting over completely and using Python instead.

Virtual reality. Think The Matrix or .Hack, i.e., the only way to tell you're in a virtual world is the things that are intentionally different from reality.

I like platformers, so I'd make a platform game. When I had MMF, I always made platform games, I rarely made anything else.

I'm a bright happy guy (usually...), and so the game would be brightly colored, cheerful, with fun graphics and (hopefully) fun gameplay. I don't really know what makes a platform game "good" by popular opinion, so I'd have to toy around with the ideas.

And yeah xk, you should make a game! (Or at least say an idea )

Edit: Also, it kinda sucks making a game by yourself. It takes a lot of work and a very dedicated person. I was making a platform engine a while ago which featured music composed by me (not bad), graphics pixel-artted by me (also not bad), a level by me, and most importantly programming by me. By now, I'd be able to rewrite it and it'd be much better, programming wise. And anyway, I kinda lost interest in it, because there would just be so much stuff I'd need to do. Oh well.

I too, would try to make a good platform game. I'm really like DKC2. I tried hacking it once, but I just couldn't manage to do it right. Regardless, DKC2 to me is a perfect platform game, and if I were to make one, I would make one like DKC2.
