Recently, my friend, who has a sizable record collection, acquired his second pre-1930 phonograph. It's a tabletop, crank-powered Victrola which he purchased for $160 and renovated with his grandfather. I have been considering the purchase of my own tabletop Victrola for everyday use; it would, at the very least, be enjoyable to go record-shopping with him after renovating it together. Afterwards, we could sip tea while listening to classical music.

Does anyone here have any experience with phonographs of that sort? They're rather fun.

Edit: I recently became aware of a good deal involving a Victor Victrola VV-VI selling for around $300 at a nearby antique store. I am currently considering its purchase, but do not have enough money on hand at the moment. Your thoughts?

We owned a phonograph back in Russia, but didn't bring it along. I don't think I ever even saw one in Germany anywhere apart from museums, but I sure would love to have one if I ever find that I need to sink some money. Devices like that have a certain charm that is absent to modern high-end high fidelity audio hardware.

When you sip tea while listening to classical music, do remember to put on a top hat and monocle and assume an over-the-top British accent to complete the image.

Is it even possible for an Asian to have a British accent?

More to the point though, while I don't have access to a phonograph, and it's far from topping my list of frivolous objects I must attain which are of little use, I'm certain it'd be nice to own one.

My family a record player, along with a decent collection of music. Granted, said player was manufactured within the past decade, but I think it still counts.

Some modern record players even uses laser apparently. Apparently a needle slowly ruins the record it's playing on.

First thing I thought on when reading the thread title is that old poor old man who accidentally ruined a phonograph cylinder in his hands... on TV.

When I saw the thread title, I thought you were talking about the cylinder-playing types.

Unfortunately, our "antique" phonograph is... in less than working condition. I don't even know where the hell it is.

But we love listening to our records (Which is actually quite a lot), so we bought a Sony Record Player. Now my dad spends a lot of time turning his records into MP3s using that thing and putting them on CDs for the car. Not that I mind, we've got some nice music.

So yes, I still use phonographs, despite being in a shitty area where everyone hates good ol' musics, and is into rap and Ipods.

This.

My grandfather has a record player (an old one, at that. Works fine).

@bzuka, don't bump old threads! The last post before yours was on 05-22-09 (May 22nd, 2009)!
