I'm confused at this point. I want a future ready cheap, but good gaming system, but I'm stuck at which to choose and which would be better. First of all I was going to go with an AM3 motherboard so I could have the new socket for future CPUs and DDR3 support, with a good amount of PCI and RAM slots. However, out of the 3 CPUs that are AM3 processors, the only one that is quad core is the Phenom II 810, at 2.6 GHz with only 4MB L3 cache; while the AM2 Phenom II (only $20 more) the 940, is 2.8 GHz with 6MB L3 cache; which seems to be better. The 810 has a higher bus obviously, supporting DDR3 memory, while the 940 only supports DDR2, and has the older slot. I'm just wondering should I go with a forward looking system (4GB DDR3 RAM, Phenom II 810 AM3) or one that will probably soon be replaced (4GB DDR2 RAM, Phenom II 940 AM2)?

I don't actually know how much of a performance gain there is between DDR2 1066 and DDR3 1600; and how this relates to the speed difference between the respective CPUs (If the DDR3 system's ram has better performance but the DDR2's CPU ihas a higher clock speed and more cache, wouldn't that sort of even out?)

I don't want to spend $100-$150 more on a DDR3 AM3 system if it is the same performance wise (or less) as the DDR2 AM2 system; yet I want a future ready upgradeable system. Which should I choose?

I've decided to go with the Phenom II 940, as of now, DDR3 doesn't seem to offer that much more performance vs fast, low latency (1066, possibly OC to 1200 MHz DDR2 with 5-5-5-15 timing) ram, plus the fact that the 940 has unlocked multipliers and is better stock than the 810 to start with.
