Ok so I'm just wondering a few things about crossfire. Does your motherboard have to specifically state it is crossfire ready? Because none of the AMD boards I've been looking at say this. I found an Asus board I might get, as it has 2 PCIe x16 slots (1x16, 1x4, or 2x8 I think) couldn't I just plug in 2 3850's in the 2 slots and bridge them?
It's at a pretty good price point and it has a lot of the features I am looking for (AM2+ Phenom II slot, 4x DDR2 1066 RAM slots, 2x PCIE x16, 3 or 4 more various PCI-E slots, etc etc) ____________________ |

I've been reading up and it seems that x16 isn't even be9ing touched as far as communication speed; x8 is perfectly fine to run a GPU on, so 2 x8 lanes in crossfire probably wouldn't hinder performance, I assume 2 x16's would be better anyways, just to be safe, and I'm not sure the difference between "Crossfire Ready" boards and boards that don't explicitly state so. And yes, it seems Crossfire/SLi doesn't utilize max maybe 50% or so (probably less) of the second card, and there are other performance hits due to synchronization. Also, you have to have the correct drivers and most games probably don't even support crossfire/SLi setup, and wouldn't even use the second card, which obviously would be a waste a GPU. It seems 1 really good single GPU or an on board dual GPU (Like the 4890x2 that I want) would be better than Crossfire/SLi financially. But for those rich extremists who want that extra fame so they can run Crysis with Max setting Full AA/AF at a ridiculous resolution, its great ____________________ |
