Not always. Just almost always. Generally there's nothing identifiable that would lead to a name, but the very first recorded computer virus, The Creeper, identified itself as such. So I guess if you wrote a virus and had part of its code execution print on screen "Hello, my name is (name) and I have infected your computer" then you would be naming your virus. But no one would ever do that because when people know they have a virus it's much harder for it to spread because they can immediately kill it if they know what they're doing. Much better to be silent and subversive.

Guys guys you're blowing this way out of proportion

If your account settings are such that your administrator password is not in the dictionary, then it cannot brute force your administrator password. If you install the automatic updates that Windows provides you, it cannot use the Windows Server security hole it looks for to infect your PC, as that was fixed way back in October. The only way it can infect your PC aside from these ways is for it to explicitly be put on your PC by an infected flash drive or other portable media device.

This virus is primarily a problem for businesses on large networks, where even a single infected computer can spread it to the entire thing. Private computers are not at risk unless their operators are stupid.

Ehrm, my version of XP isn't that...legit.

I don't remember the exact details but I can't use the automatic updates on this one. At least, it's not that wise. But on Vista, I'm able to.

Then you deserve a virus you horrible internet pirate!!

I should lure that worm onto my USB drive and have fun with the school board's server.

Not like the goddamn server's used to do research and useful stuff.

The only thing I see happening on those goddamn screens is WC3 and Runescape. Seriously, they need to go play on their own computers.

Most schools in the UK use Linux servers, even if all the terminals run Windows NT #.0. Conficker.C is a virus that explicitly affects Windows.

It might be different in the US, but I figure it probably isn't.

Posted by Sukasa
My parents are worried about it, so from late March 31st to early April 2nd our router's gonna be unplugged

But as far as Conficker goes, it certainly *sounds* nasty. Myself, I'm going to end up backing up my info and wiping sensitive stuff (classic CYA stuff because I've got my name on an NDA), but apart from that I wonder what'll happen.

One of many reasons anyone older than 30 shouldn't be told anything about their computer.

virii
The plural of "virus" is "viruses." It is not a word of Latin origin, and thus it does not get the Latin plural form of the suffix "us." Even if it did, it would be "viri," not "virii." "Virii" sounds stupid, anyway.

I am at a university in the dorms. That means that quite possibly lots of Windows users around me will get the virus, but I can just sit here using my Linux box with impunity. (At least if our servers survive, which should be the case, since the ones of which I know do not run any variant of Windows.)

Oops...that makes me sound like one of those people who stockpiles food to survive unlikely disasters. (Not that it is unwise—it just looks silly to everyone else.)

The day someone makes a cross-platform worm that does not call home or otherwise announce its presence until it has a significant installed base, I will be worried. Until then, I can hope that critical infrastructure is sensibly designed & reasonably secure.

This was a moderately interesting read. Wouldn't it, by the way, be a correct observation that the pre-IT English usage of "virus" had much more of this generic notion? (i.e. "He's down in bed with a virus."(referring to the whole disease as a single 'virus')/"This strain of virus..."/...) and the problem posed with the cited example "Index of Viruses" could have been avoided altogether if science consequently applied it in that fashion?

But I digress.

Randy, how can one such hypothetical "cross-platform worm" determine that it has a significant installed base without announcing its presence (and receiving presence announcement from its peers)? How can it even proceed to infect other machines without announcing its presence in some way, even if that's just making use of whatever its infection vector is? Unless it's put in some popular software package, the connected subgraphs created by physical media distribution are conceivably small these days.

Viruses and malware have gone to from being the job of computer hackers with too much sparetime to criminals who wants to sell their bootleg viagra. So of course they don't want to identify themselves.

Infact most modern viruses don't even try to ruin the computer it's on. It's easier to spread if none notices it.

I agree with blackhole, I want a copy of it. With source code preferably.

Nothing here. But the new AVG 8.5 DID catch some minor stuff, though.
