"Blog by Christopher Null. Posted on Yahoo.com"

In an event that hits the computer world only once every few years, security experts are racing against time to mitigate the impact of a bit of malware which is set to wreak havoc on a hard-coded date. As is often the case, that date is April 1.

Malware creators love to target April Fool's Day with their wares, and the latest worm, called Conficker C, could be one of the most damaging attacks we've seen in years.

Conficker first bubbled up in late 2008 and began making headlines in January as known infections topped 9 million computers. Now in its third variant, Conficker C, the worm has grown incredibly complicated, powerful, and virulent... though no one is quite sure exactly what it will do when D-Day arrives.

Thanks in part to a quarter-million-dollar bounty on the head of the writer of the worm, offered by Microsoft, security researchers are aggressively digging into the worm's code as they attempt to engineer a cure or find the writer before the deadline. What's known so far is that on April 1, all infected computers will come under the control of a master machine located somewhere across the web, at which point anything's possible. Will the zombie machines become denial of service attack pawns, steal personal information, wipe hard drives, or simply manifest more traditional malware pop-ups and extortion-like come-ons designed to sell you phony security software? No one knows.

Conficker is clever in the way it hides its tracks because it uses an enormous number of URLs to communicate with HQ. The first version of Conficker used just 250 addresses each day -- which security researchers and ICANN simply bought and/or disabled -- but Conficker C will up the ante to 50,000 addresses a day when it goes active, a number which simply can't be tracked and disabled by hand.

Well this is quite scary. O_o

Does anybody have any more info on this???

Oh gawd....

This sounds like a beautifully crafted piece of software.

I want a copy to poke at.

Shouldn't this be somewhere else?

Like hard-/software?

Moving it now.

Some garden-variety businessmen downloading porn flatrate dialers will probably get hit, a couple of SMWC users will whine about hacks that should never see daylight anyway being lost forever and/or a couple of huge corporate sites will be down for a couple of days.

I'll watch it from the sidelines, laughing at all the people running around in circles and screaming.

Either that or it will be the best April Fools' prank ever.

blackhole: inorite

this all just seems way too serious for it to actually be real. it also seems highly unlikely that it's an actual virus, i mean seriously? Conifcker C? that's not really a good name for a virus

sounds more like a medicine

My parents are worried about it, so from late March 31st to early April 2nd our router's gonna be unplugged

But as far as Conficker goes, it certainly *sounds* nasty. Myself, I'm going to end up backing up my info and wiping sensitive stuff (classic CYA stuff because I've got my name on an NDA), but apart from that I wonder what'll happen.

Cautionary measures really seem unnecessary, as long as you check your machines for some of the symptoms described in that analysis Arbe posted beforehand.

I should lure that worm onto my USB drive and have fun with the school board's server.

Not like the goddamn server's used to do research and useful stuff.

The only thing I see happening on those goddamn screens is WC3 and Runescape. Seriously, they need to go play on their own computers.

As for the virus, I'm not gonna do anything as a precaution... Just play games as usual. Eh. I've had virii before. Annoying, but I GOT THROUGH

virii
The plural of "virus" is "viruses." It is not a word of Latin origin, and thus it does not get the Latin plural form of the suffix "us." Even if it did, it would be "viri," not "virii." "Virii" sounds stupid, anyway.

Most likely anything that happens on April 1st will also happen afterwards, so if you're infected that won't help. But it's not hard to tell if you're infected with something. Further, it's easy to remove if you have it and know that you have it. Consult any number of antivirus sites (or even the Wikipedia page for Conficker) for more information.

I wish I could play WC3 on my school computers.

That game is the shit.

I'm not worried, at most I'll lose some Touhou games and a lot of pictures.

Not much.

There's another one quite bad virus called DownAdUp out there too. Was said to be the most dangerous virus in 5 years. It even managed to crash the French Air Force's computers.

Hm, wait. Now I read that DownAdUp is another name for Conficker. Conficker C is also called DownAdUp.B++.

I should get an external harddrive ASAP.

Guys guys you're blowing this way out of proportion

If your account settings are such that your administrator password is not in the dictionary, then it cannot brute force your administrator password. If you install the automatic updates that Windows provides you, it cannot use the Windows Server security hole it looks for to infect your PC, as that was fixed way back in October. The only way it can infect your PC aside from these ways is for it to explicitly be put on your PC by an infected flash drive or other portable media device.

This virus is primarily a problem for businesses on large networks, where even a single infected computer can spread it to the entire thing. Private computers are not at risk unless their operators are stupid.

It makes me glad my good computer isn't connected to the internet.

And Confiker is a lame name. If I named a virus it would be a mishmash of my full name and social security number. I would be revered for ages.

It's mostly(always?) the security analysts, not the makers, who name viruses...
