I recently bought a new Hard Drive to store all my anime/movies/music and all was right with the world. Until now that is... A while ago while copying a movie from a disk, Windows Explorer would continuously spit out an error and close as soon as I opened the folder with the movie in it in explorer. I figured, maybe the disk was fucked up, so I just deleted the movie and everything else was perfectly fine. Now however, after moving a pretty massive 36GB to it in one pop (Ranma 1/2 btw lol) it does the same thing when I go to one of the season folders that the episodes are organized in. I tried to look up what it could be and the only things I found that seemed like it would work was http://www.villanova.edu/artsci/college/it/support/explorer_error.htm
and
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=817768
neither of which worked (I changed the registry value to 0x10000000 (268435456) because I figured the higher number the better....)

The message generated is usually just the standard
"Windows Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close."
but it sometimes it says
"The exception Integer division by zero. (0xc0000094) occurred in the application at location 0x0325dd11. Click OK to terminate CANCEL to debug."

Also, when I attempt to mount it in Linux (PCLOS 2007) it fails, saying there's an error ao SuperBlock, or codepage error.

Any ideas as to what is wrong and how I can fix it? The files all can be read and opened just fine, I think, I haven't actually opened all of them though.

It's a Western Digital 750GB internal HDD, 7200 rpm SATA 3.0Gbps, 16MB cache, "green" series.

Problems in Internet Explorer should be ignored since Internet Explorer isn't supposed to be used in the first place...

Nowhere in my post do I make a reference to Internet Explorer, although I hate it as much as everyone else. I'm talking about Windows Explorer, the program that handles files and folders on your Hard Drive. It keeps fucking up and I don't want my 130-some Gigabytes of data to get corrupted.

Also to clarify, the bar in Windows with the Start menu button... that's Windows explorer.

That's right, it's like a bad reflex because of the word "Explorer"...

Apart from the corruption (which might be, in fact, unrelated), this sounds a lot like an issue I encountered on my desktop machine with an ancient version of CorelDRAW (7) trying to substitute its previews for file icons.
Movies get previews generated of them as well, so I think it wouldn't be too outlandish to assume that to be a part of the problem. Have you checked if the problem occurs in one of the small-icon modes, e.g. the list one?

Holy Shit.... That's what it was I guess.... Which doesn't make any sense.... how that affects Linux mounting it..... Maybe has something to do with the either/or the fact that A.) I have VLC installed which could be trying to render thumbnails, B.) There's so many files in the same folder, C.) Filename character limit on NTFS? Hell I don't know, B couldn't be it because it fucked up originally with just ONE 800MB movie file....

Confusing, confusing....

EDIT: Oh, now it fucks up when I right click sometimes in those large folders.

If it is related to VLC context in Explorer (right click menus, rendering thumbnails, etc etc) it still doesn't explain Linux not being able to mount it.

Again,

Linux' ntfs-3g won't mount NTFS volumes marked unclean, I think. Run chkdsk or something.

I ran check disk, I don't remember if it was before or after trying to mount it in Linux. Anyways, I just noticed it does it even if I just highlight a file in those folders and if I right click. Changing the view mode to details prevented it from crashing when I opened the folder at least. I just don't get it...

Under XP, when you highlight a file, it starts trying to render the preview in the sidebar. Same old thing.

Also, if you crash, your volume remains flagged unclean/used. Chkdsk, then do a clean reboot into Linux.
(Alternatively, there's a way to enforce the mounting under Linux, but I don't remember it off hand...)

hmmm... I just uninstalled VLC and ran a quick check disk (didn't automatically fix file system errors or scan for bad sectors) and nothing came up then booted into Linux, same problem. Error message comes up
"Mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1.\missing codepage or other error."

On a lighter note, it seems to work fine in Windows now, albeit one crash when I right clicked a lot of files back to back. I also just thought it might be McAfee's active Virus Prevention, it seems like something related to McAfee fucked up my friend's right clicking of anything, but I could be wrong.

This is annoying....

Also, is there any way to disable all of these "conveniences?"

Such as the task sidebar, the context menus of programs when you right click files.

Oh, and do you know of any good stand alone NTFS HDD scanner/repair?

Actually it will if you force it. I had to do that once when I had a drive marked unclean due to a (panic-induced) shutdown. I then mounted the NTFS partition manually with --force and removed the troubling malware I had. It's probably dangerous if Windows is in "hibernation" and could cause corruption.

If you forcingly turned off the computer, Windows shouldn't be in hibernation anyway and it should be safe to forcingly mount the disc...

There's a very limited set of situations where it's safe to forcibly mount the volume[1], and that's not one of them. There is a good reason the driver refuses to mount the volume when it is marked dirty.

[1] Actually, it's always safe to mount read-only (the ro option), since nothing is ever written in that mode (thus "read only"), the most that could happen is some harmless reading errors due to a corrupted filesystem.

Problem Solved.

My primary Hard Drive got a virus, probably because I was trying to crack some fucking program... Thank you torrent sites... Anyways, installing Windows Vista solved my problem. I'm having problems with some legacy software though (I'm looking at you System Shock 2 )
