Encrypts your IM conversations in Pidgin. Useful incase you're paranoid about big brother watching you or something.
(And if you dislike Pidgin, you can use the AIM proxy on the same page. And there is a few alternatives...) ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

Oh, kick ass.
Although I don't really use MSN to chat offensive shit, it's still great to know nobody's looking at my convos. ____________________ RAEG |

I've been using it for a long time now, I pretty much encourage other people to install it too, it's usually pretty easy to convince them.
Big Brother is pretty far-fetched to worry about, but when you actually know, even rudimentary, where your IMs are really being sent, it's obvious how such privacy that OTR provides helps. People mistake IMs as being as private as a face-to-face chat; short of hidden microphones, your conversation is typically only between you and the other guy, safe to speak freely about anything without consequence pretty much. IMs feel as private as a face-to-face conversation, but they aren't by nature; your message is being bounced between dozens of hosts, including the service provider of the IM (eg, AOL or Google), possible for interception by anyone without your knowledge. OTR actually provides privacy by encryption your messages with a strong algorithm which is near impossible to crack; all those hosts that it goes though can see that you are sending messages back and forth, but it is impossible to determine what the content of the messages are. That's the summary of how it works... also on another topic, I'd recommend not to tell the software that the other user is "Verified" unless you actually have a real-life method to verify such. Because OTR relies on an insecure network (the Internet) to transmit encryption keys, you can't be 100% sure that the key is not from a middleman without an external source to verify it. It's pretty easy, you can just share a common secret, such as a word or phrase, and enter it into OTR, it'll check if both of you have typed the same word/phrase :-) |

I verify someone the first time I meet someone over IM and then get suspicious whenever it switches to unverified.
You can do the secret question thing, which is what me and blackhole89 did to each other. ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org
