Gee, who'd have thought I'd ever post something fairly serious here? Anyway...

I've been wondering just now, how far do you guys think you could go in graphics editing without having it look misplaced and/or like shit? I mean, it's all pre-rendered 3D, right? How many of us here at board2 even have a 3D modelling app, or sufficient skill?

Ofcourse, you could redo it all in a more... romhacker friendly style, but that's a lot of tiles.

Just wondering.

Well, romhackers aren't generally used to isometric style graphics; neither do romhackers have a 3D modeling program handy, much less the skill to use it. Even if they did, the chances that graphics were to be made is much less likely than, say, SMB3 graphics.

As far as I'd take it, there might be one or two people here (or elsewhere) who might make some graphics within a few years. Not the few thousand tilesets that exist for SMW nowadays...

If I had a 3d modeling program and the skills to actually make something decent, I would be all over making some new graphics.

Yeah, that's about the reactions I expected to get.

I still think they couldn't get Mario and Peach to look non-retarded (among other things) back then. Nowadays things are different, but a lot of sprites in SMRPG are near nightmare fuel. Especially when you see higher resolution renders.

Really don't mean to troll you guys here though. Aside from the above, SMRPG is a fine game.

When I had the motivation to screw with the game... last year (program pushed back though) I was going to grab graphics from Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis.

Hm... from what little I've seen from Tactics Ogre, that could work...

But yeah, I think that an entire full-out graphics hack of SMRPG is out of the question, solely because SMRPG features such an immensive amount of graphics. I also agree that SMRPG's graphics were... less than satisfactory, and I think a full graphics "base" hack would be a good thing to do. But finding anyone to actually manage to have the time to do that would be hard, and a collaborative effort would probably not work out too well because everyone draws in a slightly different style.

Finding some idiot with too much free time is nothing. Waiting for him to finish the damn thing is another

^ Thats the excuse Kawa uses for Openpoke!

Although the graphics are sub-par, they can still look good even with just simple palette changes (some of the textures looked a little bland). I would imagine drawing in the style of SMRPG would be difficult enough, but a full scale graphics change could work. The only thing is that you'd need to make the graphics have a SMRPG feel to them..

For 3D modeling, I've been looking into Blender.

I've used Blender for creating weapons for Oblivion on the PC--it's relatively simple, if you've the patience to learn the program (if only to learn your way around the program.

But yeah, I think that an entire full-out graphics hack of SMRPG is out of the question, solely because SMRPG features such an immensive amount of graphics. I also agree that SMRPG's graphics were...

I wouldn't think that just because the original game had a large amount of varied graphics, that a hack would have to have the same amount of detail.

Personally, I would rather have the varied environments than the detailed original style. The only real bad thing would be you wouldn't have the depth to the game, like with Moleville, or the underwater part of the game, or even some of the dungeons.

This

Just can't really replace this :/
