Hmm, I wonder why he even bothered using a real password though.. might as well just mash in random keys and get a bunch of gibberish for a password with any old misc file inside - much harder to debunk the contents if you can't even access it after all.. but perhaps he was a bit naive and didn't think anyone would try examining the ROM more closely..

*shrugs* A strange case, this one.

Well, he probably tried to make the ROM file look broke while still having stuff that would resemble a game for hackers.

Unfortunately, it leaves ROM hackers unimpressed. Only really really naive people would fall for this now. :/

I just felt the need to get an explination out of this dude, so I e-mailed him. I'll keep you posted with what he had to say. And hell this whole hoax probably would have worked better if he would have at least hacked in the tiles for the title screen in his "photos" instead of the ZeldaDX title screen.

Someone should post this to Slashdot/digg, complete with information regarding how this guy is full of it.

You should probably link him to this thread.

...and ask why he used a text editor for screwing with the game at parts. Random occurrences of linebreaks doesn't really belong to a NES ROM, and other weird bytes...

Take Zelda 1, replace random strings of 2 bytes by 0D 00 0A 00 or FD FF 00 00, change a few other parts randomly, add byteswapped garbage before the header and maybe a few other bytes, and you have this supposed Zelda 3 prototype ... that's pretty much what it is, as I compared it with Zelda 1 The damn thing won't run, even if I remove the excess bytes ...

Too bad too, as I still had a little hope before this

My "ZELDA III" (posted above) would have been a better hoax, at least it runs and almost looks legit for a few seconds, even matching the title screen pictures that were shown

Oh well, I don't care if this is totally a hoax, because MY Zelda III prototype is prettier!

So HA! Sorry I didn't show my NES in the picture, because that always proves that it's real.

(nice try, but the font seems too large for the NES's 256x224 resolution )

I ran mine on a real NES too, see:

I don't have a TV in my room so I used my video input instead, but you can still tell

(fine, it was Nestopia with the NTSC filter)

I first heard about it last May and it had already been a good while, so maybe a year and half ... people called it fake long before this already, with the lack of any real proof

Um, guys, I think this bullshit "ROM" is a red herring. First, from the bottom of the Z3 article:

UPDATE 22: For those of you who never knew, the cart was sold in June 2006. However, I did make a rom prior to selling the cart and the buyer knew this. Keep in mind that he bought the cart, not the rights to the game. Instead of keeping the rom to myself forever, I decided to make the March 2007 Project Zero contest's prize THE ROM ITSELF! Visit Project Zero to try to win. For those of you who ARE playing, download what you need, and what everyone else is looking for, RIGHT HERE. Have fun both with the contest and the rom.

Then, by looking at the source of the Project Zero page, I found this inside of a good old HTML comment:

Everyone who gets the solution by the end date will get their name entered into a hat, and the winner will be randomly drawn out. The number of entries you get in the hat depends on how many days you have left until the deadline. If you have 20 days left, you get 20 entries. If you have 1 day left, or you get it on the last day, you get 1 entry. Ready. Set. Go! Good luck!

I'm not saying that there still is a real ROM behind this, but the prize ROM to the contest is most likely not zelda3proto.nes either way.

So he's still full of bullshit, just different bullshit.

I don't see how this would work even.

It makes more sense now (I noticed that part but not the comment), but I'll still have to see the "real" ROM to really believe it

Hopefully the winner does distribute it if it happens to be good ...

I can't see how the person who wins the contest would be kept from distributing the ROM as he/she pleases, and if that's the case how this silly contest is any more efficient or, for that reason, even has a point, since once it's over the end result is similar to if he'd released the ROM directly.

Unless, of course, the whole contest is rigged, and the "winner" won't distribute the ROM at all, in which case people will just spout (as they are already) that it's complete and utter BS.

I'm pretty sure this isn't the first "contest" this guy has had, or a bid, or something like that.

Sure, if its real, I'll check it out and it'll be fun. If not, oh well.

Yeah, but shouldn't that statement read "For those of you who ARE playing, download what you need, and what everyone else is looking for, RIGHT HERE." as one complete statement, or is this guy just kind of shitty with the english language? Not to mention this (from the top of the page):

Updates To This Page Are At The Bottom, Newest Coming Last including THE ROM

As I said before. If there is any proto rom, he's holding it for himself until the contest is over. This other .7z file is just a fake to lure n00bs to his site.

I think that is what happened with the so called buyer of the game. Someone came in near the end of the bidding to put in a bid of 1 dollar over what any one else would pay. Probably him re-registering and "buying" his cart so no real buyers would be able to expose him.
