Actually, I know the reason for pretty much sure.
It would spoil the entire website thing, remember? Journalists everywhere would need to be put under a NDA so they wouldn't talk about it, and that couldn't be trusted at all.

I would have guessed that Nintendo would have only shown a version up to date with the site if they did have it to play. But it still would ruin some parts like the character selection screen. Even if they didn't have all of the players able to be seen.

Just because it isn't going to be playable doesn't mean that they'll not have any announcements, though. Hopefully we seem some awesometastic new characters.

And they don't want to spoil all of the new gameplay features, I'm sure. They've been saying that a lot of characters are going to be adjusted.

Tonights update is Bowsers Final Smash!!

Boy does that look sexy.

Also, I like the fact that they knew exactly what many people were wondering. Would they fix the problem where Bowser can be hit repeatedly thus rendering him useless?

We are mostly well aware what Samus' Final Smash will be. The beam that is shot in the E3 video of course.
I'm sure that Snakes will involve calling someone in via his radio transmitter.
