Ok, so I was at Dairy Queen today, and I ordered a chocolate dipped ice cream cone. While it's being passed to me over the counter, it slips out of my hand and splatters all over the floor. So I'm like "Um, sorry can I have another cone, I accidently dropped it on the floor" so they give me another one. And as I'm on my way out of Dairy Queen this old man sitting at a table with four other people catches me and is like "you dropped the ice cream and you are having them pick it up!?" and I was like "yeah" because I presumed that they not only would have the responsibility to clean up the mess in their restaraunt but would also be much more equipped to do so. So this big scene erupts in the restaraunt. The employee cleaning up the mess agrees with the old man and says "yeah, we even gave you a free ice-cream". The old man starts up again and is like "do you do this at home too?" and I'm like "of course not, totally different scenario."

Then a third guy joins in on the drama. He comes to my defense and questions the old man "do you do this to everyone?" and the old man's wife pats the old man on the back and smiles, "everywhere we go". I then look at the other two people at the old man table and they are reluctantly smiling, appearing embarrassed by the whole thing. And the old man is still looking at me furiously. Still in disbelief that he's not being facetious, I say to him "are you like serious?" and the third guy is like "forget it man, he's not worth it" and I'm like "I agree" and we walk out.

Later, I notice third guy out in the parking lot following me with his chihuahua. He catches up to me and is like "man that guy was an asshole!" and I'm like "I don't know maybe he's just old or something, but I thought it was store policy to have them clean up the mess". Third guy is definitely more bothered about the whole thing more than me. "It's not like you had a mop to clean it up or anything. He just needs to wake up and realize that shit happens!"

Anyway, I can't really blame the old man for getting mad at the apparent lack of consideration, but I just felt that employees routinely clean up messes there and have the tools to clean up melted ice cream that's all over the floor. However, the fact that an employee agreed with him is what bothers me, and I feel like writing a complaint.

I have become guilty of resolving a "dropped item on the floor, big mess" incident in a department store by quickly getting away from the scene of the crime at least once for the frist person who finds it to clean it up. (But then, that was long ago...)
In an event like yours, I'd probably have stuck around donning a helpless smile or asking something like "is there anything I can help you with" while knowing well it would be their policy to answer no.

Old people, on the other hand... I guess it's sorts of a privilege of advanced age to bicker about and try to educate "young people these days" and contrast the present against an idealized memory of their own past "when everything was better". I remember witnessing some old guy going ballistic at a young woman eating a breadroll in the tram (nominally, food and drink are not allowed in them in Dresden, but it's actually more of a "if you get porridge all over our seats, we'll tell you to gtfo and don't say we didn't warn you" thing nobody really cares about anymore) and actually going as far as trying to drag her from her seat and push her out of the door at a stop, and vaguely remember a rainbow press article about a girl of 16 being beaten up by an old couple with walksticks to the point of having to be hospitalized for something like trying to push her way past them on the sidewalk.

An old guy and a minimum-wage teenager complained about a thing? Damn... really gives you cause to wonder. What the f*ck is up with our society, man.

Then, when complained about later online, someone made a snarky comment! Our society is obviously morally eroded.

Wow, that old man's just like one of my friends. If we leave our eating place and litter, he'll command us to clean it up, as litter really pisses him off. Hell, it even pisses ME off sometimes, so I understand. Otherwise, he's a pretty awesome friend.

I kind of pretend to help when I've spilled something at a restaurant (or similar scenario) as I am not one of those "assholes" everyone keeps hearing about.

I also kinda hate it when old people throw fits like that. Pisses me off. Was the dude's name Walter?

It depends on the situation though, I help if I'm able to but if I don't have the equipment... I can't really do anything.

Thankfully most old people I came across weren't grumpy at all. In worst case they're just a little bit strange.

Grumpy Old Men can be real dicks sometimes. That's what makes them grumpy old men.

Ofcourse, younger people can also display such behavior. That's life.
