Yes I am back after a 3 year hiatus. After Redesign I moved onto puzzle building, but I got motivated by this:

I have decided to take the Super Metroid engine and create a mode where the player will enter a door and be taken to a random destination.

this goes on forever until the player dies and the goal is to get as many screens explored as fast as possible before dying.

So far with the help of InsomniaDMX and PJboy I have a whole bunch of codes already in place for the hack. we're halfway ready to beginning level design

Good work, although im concerned about bosses, how will they be affected i mean someone could easily just repeatedly space jump between screens.

This is a pretty damn good idea. I gotta admit, I'm a little jealous that you have the ability (or have people who have the ability) to do ASM work, because I've had this idea when I first played through Super Metroid. I could see a lot of side-by-side racing going on...

what do you mean space jump in between screens?

also the player will only be able to have 1 item equipped at a time, and obviously things like space jump need tuning, I have limited to 5 jumps in the air, and you need to land before doing any more. (thanks to PJman) but that's just to prevent things like boss exploits. This hack is not about exploration as it is following a linear path a random layout, or rather random expectation and surviving it.

What do you mean by "only one item can be equipped at once"? One beam, boots, etc, or just one item in the whole item menu?

This is a great idea..!
Although.. designing a game type so complex, especially based on Super Metroid truly takes the mind of a genius :/

..so no worries there!

I believe I will limit it to One beam at a time, and one suit upgrade at a time. Bombs, Morphball and Walljump being the only items on all the time)

I am using the redesign as the base because it has a bunch of useful thing programmed in already.

Does Charge Beam count as one beam or what?
I can't really imagine myself going through the game with Plasma but without Charge, heh.

Like redesign currently is, charge beam counts as neither beam nor suit, it can be equipped with one of any beam

Finally have a new video demo:

This shows just how random the door code is. All these rooms are in inside a single room with 24 screens acting as "separate" rooms None of the doors have any door definition. everything is determined simply by the BTS of the door tile (00 being a left side door, 01 being right, 02+ being a boss)

The fact that you can just go back through all the doors you come in is silly, you should probably make all the doors you come out of un-enterable.

I figured that. I just thought I'd point it out anyways.

Why not use some kind of door groups? When you enter a door, a random room among a specified set of rooms is selected. This way, you don't break the flow as you create the groups and they don't short-circuit the progress of the game...

I don't know the mechanics of this game, but is there any way to identify the doors? Do they have some kind of ID? How is the destination room defined?

Thats exactly how this code works. all the doors transitioning left are in one table, and all the doors right are in another. they are determined by their BTS which is from which group.

on top of that there is a blacklist which tallies up to a certain amount of rooms, as you go through the door pointer that pointer is no longer usable until you have gone through, say, 30 rooms

BTS stands for 'Behind the Scenes'. It's a certain kind of a property set to a tile, to determine how it acts; as a slope, a breakable block, a bombable block, a spike, air, etc..
