... when you start a thread, you can choose to have a little icon next to it. A ! is one of the options. You probably just did that on accident.

He probably is referring to . That icon is put in place of the "new"/nothing in front of regular threads when the reply count exceeds a certain number (may or may not be 50, too lazy to look up); the filename should be enough of a spoiler for that.
