Well I finally got a new computer, which is a decent computer (glad to get rid of my ancient pos) but I am wondering about upgrading it. First thing I was thinking was of course, RAM, the mobo in it only supports 2 GB DDR2 ram, which is fine with me, I already ordered it off of newegg. However, I was reading up about the CPU in it and it uses the LGA 775 socket. Can I just pop out the 2GHz Celeron and replace it with a Cor2Quad Q6600?

Also, I was looking at a 1GB Nvidia 9400GT, which seemed to be a really good card for only $50, which requires a 300W or greater UPS, just wondering how it fares against crisis and other GPU hungry games.

EDIT: It's an eMachines T-3656 pc.

Why would you buy a motherboard that only supports 2GB of RAM?

Whether the motherboard can take a different CPU really depends on the board. If you can find the model of the board, you can find out what CPUs it'll take. As for the 8400, I'd get something a bit stronger, but with less vram, if price is an issue. 512MB is still very good, and it'll run better in the end. I had an 8500 which ran alright, but probably wouldn't do too well at really intensive games. To give you an idea: It _can_ play portal at full settings at around 1280x720, but it can get kinda choppy at times. It was uselessly slow at 1920x1080, if you're a resolution freak.

I got the computer for free, my brother bought it from Wal-Mart a while ago and when he got his taxes back this year he built a beast ass $1800 pc with the core i7, 6GB DDR3 ram, Radeon HD-4870, etc etc... so he gave me this one.

If I could upgrade it a little, I would pretty much be getting a dual core, 2GB RAM, nVidia 9400GT, for about $180-$200. Maybe I'll look for a better GPU, that one was only $50 though, which did seem like a good deal for a 1GB VRAM. Maybe the cards from ATI, they appear to be a really good price for the performance.

The Motherboard is an Intel 945GC Express chipset, which according to Intel's website it supports up to the Core2Duo.

Well, what would be recommended for a GPU around $100 that is pretty good for high level gaming?

its PCIe x16 i think it has 2 slots not sure, regardless , how do you calculate how much power you need? The only thing I know of to add is the GPU and CPU power requirements, which would be about 450, but do you need a larger UPS than that due to inefficiency or other power being drawn?

yeah, best to go a bit over. 550 tends to be alright unless you're stuffing 2 high powered video cards and a bunch of hard disks in there. Even 450 would probably be fine with the CPU and a midrange card.

Ok so I got my other 1GB ram today and popped it in, not really all that noticeable unless I'm running a lot of crap at the same time.

Looking at the Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 @ 2.8 GHz, the Radeon HD 4670 (1GB GDDR3 VRAM/320 SPUs), and a Cooler Master 550W UPS for about $300; not including Shipping.

Anyone have any experience regarding connecting higher performance/power cpus to a OEM mobo? The Intel website for that motherboard states it supports up to Core2duo, but idk....

I got a Sapphire HD 3850 with 512MB GDDR3 VRAM and a really cheap 550 Watt Power Supply. Seems to run most games really well actually, since I know the performance IS bottlenecked by my single core CPU and slow motherboard buses. Regardless, I run games at 1024x768, and all the games I've tried so far run perfectly (albeit slooooow loading and sometimes a freeze up when it auto saves, which doesn't really matter though, it's just annoying) I will probably get a dual core CPU at some point. I've played Dawn of War 2, Half Life 2, Grand Ages Rome, and Spore all on the highest available settings @ 1024x768 and all seem to run perfectly fine. I will try some more demanding games to see if I can play them before I go out and buy anything.
