I have a copy of the board2 base that has a whole range of interesting RPG add ons, admittedly not all compatible with every browser, and I'd love to contribute it when it's a little more done if blackhole89 wasn't against me ever helping with anything ever

I really like seeing everyone trying to help out though. It's that little spirit that makes me think there is hope left yet.

We should organize some sort of math competition. From what I've seen, it's a great way to get the community together and have fun.

Has beendone before, both in the referenced threads and some others before them. I think a somewhat IOI-style programming competition (with simpler tasks, of course) would find more potential competitors here, especially if we allow the "softer" languages like PHP too.

Arbe: Do you know of Acmlm's RPG code stub?

Hmm - the "IRC Factor". I didn't consider that - although it's yet another feature that I personally don't use.

As for doing different add-ons or hosting competitions on the board with the goal of increasing activity, for the people who are busy against their will with stuff like school, or are actually ROM hacking during the little free time they have because they would prefer to do that, I don't know if such additions would actually increase activity. Of course, if a lot of people are interested in those ideas, please don't let me turn any of you off from those ideas.

Like it has been said, apparently it is easier to discuss things in IRC chat where discussion is not limited by specific board topics.

After thinking it over too and Emuz said it as well, people more than likely prefer doing their own projects than working with a bunch of people - and in the case of collaborative projects, the groups tend to be a smaller group of people who know they can get along and everyone is able to contribute to the project. While more people might seem like a good idea because "many hands supposedly make light work", people tend to disagree quite a bit and a lot of time might be wasted just trying to agree on what everyone is going to do and how they are going to do it. So the board-wide hack is probably a no-go since people prefer the freedom of doing their own thing.

In fact, I would say that I prefer doing my own thing too. Of course, I barely have any time to work on anything - I've had the Zone editing stage for Quick Bros. 2 (SMB3 hack) done since the beginning of 2009, but I haven't been motivated to work on the Realm Maps, text, graphics, music, etc. I also joined an SMB3 project with Googie which I've done a little work on too. If I were to come on the board more than I currently do though to play RPGs and engage in different competitions, when would I have the time to do the little ROM hacking I've been trying to do? Again, it might just be me - but with all the currently active ROM hacking projects that are going on right now, if all those people were to be more active on the board than they are, when would those projects get done so that we would be able to enjoy the end results?

As it has also been implicated, some new registrations end up being members who make a few posts (or even none at all) before leaving and never coming back. Ironically, it might be considered that I did this when I first registered since I was focused on letting everyone know about the Quick Bros. 2 project that I started - and then I didn't come on because I was trying to work on it.

Anyway, since I've already stretched this "blah-blah" post for long enough, I'll just finish by saying that while the board might seem like it's inactive, it's only because people have other stuff that they would probably rather get done with the little free time that they can manage like ROM hacking or managing collaborative ROM hacking projects, just for a quick example. Since I had the assumption that ROM hacking was supposed to be the (or at least 'a') main focus of the community, it would actually be pretty useless if people weren't taking the time necessary to do ROM hacking (which from what I can tell by all the awesome Mega Man stuff that has been coming up, that's what people are doing).

Hmm, I'll invite my friends from my board to join here. This board is fun: I like the rpg stats, the fact that I actually got a crit gives me and my writing a second purpose to posting. (first purpose was simple to enjoy the stay here)

I think an event or a contest would bring add more life to here. Actually, the above poster was right. This board isn't inactive. People just get onto their rom hacking or doing w/e. It would be nice if they had tabbed browsing and just kept this as one of their tabs so that we can see this board can have at 30 users online.

But anyway, a good Smw hacking contest would do. Since that's the purpose of my board, I'll invite all the members to come to this board and compete against everyone here.

That would really bring more activity here.

I don't think this inactivity will last forever. It is temporary. As soon as we start seeing more of those cool Japanese Rockman hacks, and more people find their way to board2, and some people register and post interesting stuff, inspiration and motivation will pick up, and we will start seeing more things. We are just in a quiet phase right now.

Something is telling me we shouldn't have to wait for "cool Japanese Rockman hacks" for our activity to pick up. We should be a bit more self sufficient when it comes to these sorts of things.

Edit: Actually, some cool Super Mario RPG hacks might get the job done.

Siggy advertising on other sites? Word of mouth probably wouldn't attract the right kind of people, and others flocking just to see an interesting hack and make a comment probably would not last long enough to actually contribute to the community.

I agree. Not everyone likes Smrpg. Its going to take a lot of effort. If you rely on hacks, people would just simply look at the screenies, download, and never come back again.

It's not just about ROM Hacks it's about how you hack them. And too much Rockman is not good for the health. Just like many things that aren't good when abused of...

This board at this time lacks posters that are capable of making funny / interesting threads that a broad range of people can discuss. I don't think we have a problem with stupid posting on this board, but we do have a problem with *inane* posting. It's like, if you don't have anything interesting to say, don't say anything at all. Maybe we should bring back banninations for "lack of content", as ambiguous as that was back in the day. (Lack of content is not the same as a lack of words, though.) Either that or I'm getting old and crankier.

In any case this forum barely resembles the acmlmboard I joined in 2003. The sense of community has diminished dramatically. There's no announcement system on this board, maybe that's part of the problem. I feel very disconnected from what the board administration is doing / planning / thinking.

You are too quick to assume that the board administration is doing/planning/thinking anything at all.
The closest things we have to an announcement system is the points-of-required-attention box and the frontpage's news window. Do you think using that to announce more board-related things would be sensible (rather than bringing back an equivalent of the old announcements.php)?

One of the problems that I believe lie at the base of what you described is that a lot of the "community", as in "sense of community", has shifted to IRC (granted, for the kind of speedy conversation that drives communities, at our scale, there is not much that can be done about it being the more efficient medium for that apart from shutting it down...) - that's where one is still most likely to get an idea of what staff is doing, too.

annoucements.php would be better than the PORA because you could use the PORA for more community based news while you could use annoucements for more important matters (that and i'm one of the people who don't look at the PORA anyway)

there are people who don't want to go in IRC, so you have to take that into consideration. To the people in IRC, it may seem like the staff are planning lots of things, but none of these are normally mentioned on the boards (if they ever do get mentioned) once they are near completetion / done, which means board-only users don't really know whats going on.

I hate the PoRA box. It's really, really stupid. It's just a space in the page for admins to insert HTML, it's not got any actual functionality other than that. A better idea would be having announcements work the same way they used to, or better yet, give administrators the option to make a thread appear at the top of every forum (super stickying or something), such functionality exists in a number of mainstream message board softwares and it's always worked well for other people. That also means people can post on the announcements, and doesn't require more than 3 minutes of coding.

It's absolutely nothing at all the same. It's not a different version of it. It's an announcements system. It just has links to announcements placed in the same place.

there's no personality. shroomy/tomguy/acmlm/whoever were all human beings with discernable characteristics and opinions that were fun to read. these days, if you gave me a lineup of posts from blackhole, sukasa, and ailure with the names removed, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
