So, I suppose most people here have probably figured out that board2's pretty inactive...

Why do you guys think that is?

Lack of real community effort towards anything. Anyone that could pilot something like that has no way of getting in to such a position. And you guys don't really let everyone know they're part of a community. People should be able to contribute without having to wait for blackhole89 to get off his ass.

NEEDS MORE DOOM CLOCKS AND LOVE.

Why can't they as it stands?

As for everyone not knowing they're a part of the community, they just need to put themselves out there more. They could quickly be welcomed if they followed the rules, etc. and overall just contributed. Though to be one of the recognized members, of course it takes time.

They can't because nearly every single thing has to be approved by him before it can happen.

Also, you can't just hope someone puts themselves out there. You have to ease people in.

Me contributing an answer to that question will probably have little to no weight anyway since I am not as regular a member as everyone else is (that's made obvious since I don't even get what is meant regarding blackhole89 having to approve everything), but from a personal standpoint, there are times when I just don't feel like coming on. That doesn't simply apply to ACMLM - it counts for a lot of sites that I normally visit. In fact, I haven't been regularly active on my own forum for over half a year now whereas between 2005-2007, I would average at least 50 posts a day. I can't do that anymore though because of other stuff that I have to deal with like school and all the work that comes with it. The biggest reason I probably don't get on is because during the little free time I have, I try to put towards actual ROM hacking.

Either way, I hope that I can be more active and that the board's activity will pick up.

True, we could be more welcoming, but that should be done by everyone. And the Introductions thread is a good way to put yourself out there and a good place where people of all ranks will welcome you and ease you in.

And curly makes a good point: plenty of people are just busy and can't be too active on stuff like forums. There could be a way to encourage activity a lot more, but I'll have to think about it at least for a little to come up with something that would at least be modestly effective.

I agree with Bukkarooo. The feeling of being welcomed has to be mutual. The staff here also can't make a user's stay welcome in the instance that the user appears out of nowhere and asks for other people to do a bunch of work for them. (I don't mean to single any such instances out - it's only an example.)

As I mentioned in RetroRain's topic concerning time travel and being able to relive the good old days again, I brought up that I would have liked to have been around when the SMB3 hacking was at its peak. All of the projects that are going on currently are excellent, don't get me wrong. It's just - ever feel like you're missing something that you never actually got to experience? (Like how can you miss something that you never actually had?) It's only a guess, but if there were more SMB3 projects like a few years ago, I might be motivated to jump on fifty times a day.

This seems to be a pretty darn active thread as it is right now! hahaha

Yeah, maybe a board-wide collaborative hack or something. Wait, isn't that what the Tower of Spatula was supposed to be or something?

Well, to be honest, I don't know what the Tower of Spatula is/was. I know that it's in the Uploader, and it's just a guess, but is it a Super Mario World hack? (I got that impression from the "Goomba test" and "custom pipes".) In such a case, I don't hack Super Mario World.

That might be an issue with inactivity too - people might actually want to post, but they don't have any topics that they feel welcome to post in. It's probably just me. It's just whenever I click in the ROM Hacking forum, I see all of these topics and posts regarding Mega Man projects and hacks. I think all of those are awesome; however, I don't play Mega Man games because I never had them growing up. So in that instance, me posting in those topics would be pointless. Again, it's likely just me who fits into that situation, but you never know who else might feel the same way. ;|

I've felt that way a couple times too.

ToS was an SMW hack meant to bring the board together, but most people who signed up just seemed to stop working on it.

Oh, I see. Thanks for clarifying that for me, Evil Shadowy Figure. I'm glad I'm not alone too, heh.

I'm sorry to hear about the Tower of Spatula project sort of dying. However, I do agree with Bukkarooo again and think that maybe a board-wide collaborative hack could perhaps bring together the ROM hackers who are willing and hoping that such a project could help bring everyone together. It would bring activity up as everyone would be collaborating with each other concerning the project.

The only problems with that are if such a project meets the same fate as the Tower of Spatula did, and that it would have to be a hack that a lot of people would be able to work on. Being "the one late to the party", I've only done NES hacking at this point - specifically SMB3 - which is sort of why I wish I could have been around a few years ago.

I don't know. It's an idea, but people would need to have the time and devotion; and with everyone being really busy these days (myself included) I don't know if it could be pulled off.

Honestly, we don't have very many interesting topics.

Nothing particularly exciting happens here.

This board from it's inception has these same points in time where the incoming population slows, and the current members seem to just be inactive. We are have our own projects, it's a nature of the members of this board. I know I have two active projects right now plus a few off to the side. ToS fell victim to the same things sadly. However it's not completely dead, and it could grow again.

I found my notes from the SMB3 when I worked with MarioHacker on getting SMAS's SMB3 hacks up to par with the NES ones. I am nostalgic too for those times sometimes myself.

If registration is limited, than there will be a slow growth. However that's not always a bad thing either. The more things to do on the site, the more you have to offer etc.

I still feel it's just another one of those down trends that will correct itself in time.

Wait. Are you implying that this current dearth in activity is not a sign of the end of the board as we know it? That's outright blasphemy in my book.

Anyways, I might make a hack or something someday, but I've been saying that to myself since I joined the community.

I think part of it might just unfortunately be IRC taking away from real activity. There's hardly a reason for some threads when they can easily be discussed in the IRC channel, and I'm a victim of this, having become ridiculously inactive (which I'm already going to fix). It's not that the channel has to be removed, but certainly more things could happen on the board that are difficult to discuss in plain ol' text. I like Board2Base and ToS for this reason.

We're the exact opposite of Jul at this point.
We talk on IRC and they post.

Maybe more.. benefits if you post more?

I was just popping in to suggest something like that. The RPG system (which Sukasa's adding items to right now anyway) could be utilized somewhat, but maybe not fully as a PvP battle system like everyone wants it to be but it will never become. Perhaps items which do neat things to the board, or give you awesome sex=3 powers. Happy Hours need to return too.

The Board and IRC are two sides of the same coin. The board is the reason for the IRC channel. The Channel brings forth more ideas towards the forums. While it may seem to get more activity, and often it does.. the board is the key.

Enhancing the RPG sounds like a good way to get more interest board side. Contests and other intra board activities might spice things up.

We should organize some sort of math competition. From what I've seen, it's a great way to get the community together and have fun.
