My computer is having abnormal symptoms from something.
I'm sure this is all caused by a virus.

- Images won't load on IE unless I do "show pictures", it's just a square, circle, triangle image.

- pop ups are coming up on both IE and Firefox

I did a virus scan but nothing came up, I'm doing another one right now.

Can anyone help me identify the virus and or tell me how to remove it?

That's pretty generic virus behaviour and not enough information to make a diagnosis. I imagine a hijackthis log would be more informative, but someone who knows Windows a bit better might be of more help.

Well the popups were telling me to download virus scanners and registry cleaners and crap, but then I downloaded Trend Micro and swept my computer like 6 times and the pop ups are gone, and virus warnings are 90% gone.

The remaining warnings might just be overly clever/persistent pop-ups. I occasionally even get those "virus/spyware warning" pop-ups in Linux (complete with the Windows-style window border ).

No way, they were real viruses, since AVG has never warned me of threats until I got viruses, or at least active viruses.

So I downloaded malwarebytes' anti-malware and it raped the remaining viruses I had.

A lot of them were lurking in system32 so it could launch when the operating system ran.

I'll thoroughly confirm if they're gone later on, so maybe you can go grab malwarebyte when some lame virus gets on your comp.

My Mom's computer just had teh same thing. I scanned using AVG free, Malwarebytes free, Spybot S&D, and SUPER AntiSpyware. Then, I cleaned everything, ran another scan, and got the stuff that survived. When it all came clean, I rebooted it, scanned again. Nothing came up, but I'm going to run over it with HijackThis! just to be safe.

But I think it worked pretty damn well. Took FOREVER, though.

Perhaps everyone has already heard about that new worm that's been going around. Here's a link for more information about it.

http://www.itbusiness.ca/it/client/en/Home/News.asp?id=51710&cid=7

Generally, if you watch what you click on and ensure that you have all your updates, you should be okay.

Sorry if this sort of pulls away from the original virus problem that this topic was about. I just thought it would be a helpful note to anyone who may need it or did not already know about it.

nebetsu@yajuu:~$ cat ./documents/post

I use ESET NOD 32 Antivirus. It's pretty solid and I highly recommend giving your computer a scan with that.

I got my new computer and it has mcAfee.

Do virus scanners scan the whole data of files, so if I scanned and it came up with nothing, and extracted a zip, there would definently be no viruses?

Yes, it will scan the files within a zip/etc archive.

so if I scanned and it came up with nothing, and extracted a zip, there would definently be no viruses?
No anti-virus program is perfect, if it says there are no viruses then most likely there aren't, but it's impossible to be 100% sure.

Cool. If you're using McAfee, you should also look into getting McAfee SiteAdvisor. When you use search engines like Google or Yahoo!, you'll be able to see which sites are safe and which are potential risks. It's a really handy tool. Most downloaded files that could potentially have viruses can be avoided if you stick to downloading files from safe sites.
