Well, all the things you described can be possible, but it would require much manual sprite editing, coding, and other things, even with Lazy Shell. I'm to Lazy to make entirely new sprites for the game, so I'll leave it to someone who is better and faster then me in that area. =p

Yeah, I'm totally lost in all of that mess, LOL! Well, I can change sprite colors okay, haha!

This and this may be able to help you in the area to which you want help in.

Super Mario RPG was notably lacking in much of a story (though the Mallow subplot, Geno origin, etc. definitely made up for that ); a problem that was (kinda) fixed with Paper Mario.

If a collaborative hack were to be done of it, a more complex story would seriously add to the appeal. But I don't think we can just have people say "Story: example", and go with that. It just wouldn't work. The best thing would probably take elements from everyone, writer or not, and mesh it together.

One thing that made SMRPG stand out was the noticeably "un-Mario" feel. I liked battling alongside Mallow and Geno, and Peach and Bowser were still there to remind you it was a Mario game. The game was much darker in tone then you'd expect from a Mario game, and that lent to its maturity. I think a major hack would do well if we took care to balance Mario characters with non-Mario characters to maintain that tone.

On that note, Mallow probably wouldn't work... He'd be too busy adjusting to royal life and meeting his parents for the first time. He'd probably be best suited as a NPC that occasionally aids your party.

Geno probably wouldn't work either, his doll-form being in possession of Gaz. But you gotta have Geno, right? So would it be possible to have his star-form take possession of another sprite? (Either edit the Geno one, or copy-paste an in-game enemy/NPC and make some changes).

By the way, I'm a writer, so I'm just spouting off ideas here... Let me know if anyone thinks one would work... Bowser and Peach were both wonderful assets to a balanced team, so either one or both of them should make a return. In either case, this would have to be done carefully. We can't just have Bowser say "Work with Mario." That just can't happen twice; it's too cliche. And Peach would be under more careful watch, though I doubt one adventure would have satiated her thirst for the experience.

One idea that I personally liked, but I'm not sure how well this would play into the theme of SMRPG, is a story tying together SMRPG and Paper Mario... They wouldn't have to occupy the same world, exactly, but certain elements could be used. Star Road would probably once again take a big role in the hack, so Star Spirit NPCs (and a Geno star-form??) could be present. And it definitely couldn't hurt to at least mention some of the Paper Mario party-members as either NPCs or through text, since actually making one a party-member would understandably involve some difficult sprite editing (or just copy-paste, edit slightly... I haven't hacked SNES games, especially not SMRPG/Lazy Shell, so I dunno ) and event introduction.

So any thoughts on these story elements?

Yeah...I'm working on an idea but it won't let me double post so it's going to take a bit of time for me to post the whole idea on under SUPER MARIO RPG 2...my thing was to leave Geno in his star form and eventually you'll visit with Prince Mallow under whatever senario I or someone else decides...

I was thinking about what story could be done for this hack and I realized that just throwing around little ideas won't work because we wouldn't know what would work for the overall plot, and even writing out an actual story is pretty vague as far as what the theme would be. So I came up with several basic frameworks we can go through, each with its own benefits and way of going around the story. I'll list them below with a short description, from which we can pick what would work best for a collab hack:

Direct sequel: All of the party members from SMRPG and the plot continues off from where it left; this can be Smithy somehow returns, or Valentina and Booster make some mischief.

True sequel: This is how most games are usually setup; we work with what we're given. Most of the elements from the previous game are recycled, and some or all of the party members may or may not return. The story does not continue from anything that happened in the previous game; rather it starts from some new disorder. The Bob-Omb Mafia hack is a good example of this.

Crossover: In this example we use elements from other games (most likely Mario games) to expand the world the hack takes place in, thus getting more story elements to work with. I'll list a few good examples below.

Super Mario Bros. 3: Airships and Koopa Kids.

Super Mario World: Yoshis and Dinosaur Land take a larger role.

Paper Mario: A larger Mushroom kingdom, new friendly NPC species, and expanded Star Road/Haven (this is a good excuse to have Geno)

The two Sequel examples are good if we want the same party members and the atmosphere unique to SMRPG, while the Crossovers are good for an expanded world/history and new characters to use as NPCs or party members. Once we choose what example to frame our story in, it'd be much easier to start getting down to the actual events that would move it forward.

Speaking of the Koopa Kids, I was totally shocked to actually seem them in M&LSSS...but I think it would be cool to see them in an SMRPG Hack, though, that'd be difficult with all the work to do to occomplish that, LOL!

I don't think it'd be that difficult, if we worked with what we have. For example, the Bowser graphic in the game only vaguely resembles what Bowser officially looks like, so it's not like we'd have to go for exact details in creating the Koopa Kids.

KP9000's thread on creating new enemies seems like it would be useful as far as this. We'd just need insert a Bowser or Terrapin graphic over one of the unused enemys to create a starting point in making a Koopa Kid. Now, inserting an in-world graphic and scripting an event around them doesn't seem much harder, but making an air ship would probably be the biggest thorn if the hack had anything to do with the Koopa Kids (though the sunken ship in Seaside Town would probably be a good shortcut).

The only way I could honestly see making any custom enemies is to pre-render them in some 3D modeling program.

I'm pretty sure that's how they did it in the first place.

Oh yes. I wasn't taking into consideration the 3D aspects. I was just thinking we could edit it like most games in a Paint way.

Well that's possible, but it'd probably be much more difficult to do.

Isn't it possible to import images? You'd still have to make the sprite, but that might be easier.

I have and idea that I will need massive help with.

The idea is in here:
http://acmlm.kafuka.org/board/thread.php?id=5149

I would like some help. I am good at editing sprites, but nothing about hacking and such. I know it'll be hard but I don't think it'll be impossible.

Hackers, spriters, whoever! is welcome.

---Edit 6/3/09---
I posted some of the sprites I have created already.

Is this project dead? If not, I would like to assist with battle scripts. I'll post a video of my boss I'm working on if I ever stop coming up with ideas for him.
