There are a few weird things I've noticed with my CD/DVD drive on this computer.
It recognizes software just fine, but if I try to put in a music CD or movie DVD, the computer acts like the drive is empty. It won't spin the disk at all most of the time, the computer insists that there is "No disk inserted" and won't let me play the songs or movie, etc. On the other hand, when I have a software disk in the drive, it will spontaneously spin at random intervals when I'm not even using the software, such as when I'm at Acmlm's. This is annoying because my CD drive is extremely loud. Is there any way to stop this? I assume some program is checking the CD drive even though there is no reason to... |

Could it be some sort of virus scanner? I think a virus scanner could cause that, I remember having something similar with my floppy drive on one of my older computers... |

I don't have a continuously running virus scanner, although I do use a firewall (ZoneAlarm). |

Sounds like the drive is going bad. Refusing to read certain discs is usually the first sign of failure. ____________________ [citation needed] |

The computer is fairly new (October 2006). It was dirt cheap though. |

I remember my virus scanner (I think it was AntiVir 9x) checking the floppy drive and/or CD drive intermittently on one of my older computers. I thought it was annoying, so I decided to switch to AVG instead. |

Posted by KernalI've had two brand-new drives (one Creative, one Samsung) crap out on me within just a few weeks, and those were name-brand retail drives. Your dirt-cheap computer probably has a dirt-cheap drive as well, so I would not be surprised at all if it's already dead. ____________________ [citation needed] |

I have a kinda different problem. If I put a blank DVD+R or DVD-R in my DVD burner drive, Windows Explorer thinks it's a CD-R. Other software that can burn DVDs recognizes it fine, but Windows acts like it's a CD-R and then freaks out when I try to burn files to it (I can't recall exactly how at the moment, and I'm too lazy to get up and try). |

Heh, the mechancical thing that pushes/pulling the cd bay didn't work correctly on a DVD-drive on my old computer. It helped to push in manually though, and it works perfectly otherwise. ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

Posted by Kernal Yeah, sounds like the drive is about to die. I had a CD drive that did the same exact symptoms you describe. First it just stopped reading music CD's, and then it just stopped reading all CD's. It also used to spin for no apparent reason and it bugged the hell out of me. |

Or time to finally replace my power supply in my other computer so I can use it instead. The power supply is such a pain to replace though, as you need to disconnect and reconnect all 4387259347507345 wires giving power to the other components in the computer. |

This may well be two separate problems. One, your drive dying causing the refusal to read discs. (I've had a number of CD-ROM drives die and the first sign was always read failures.) Two, stupid Windows bugs/weirdness that causes it to just access drives randomly. It likes to access my floppy drive whenever I open a directory with a lot of files in it. |
