As far as the tats and piercings go... it's a hepatitis risk that they're concerned with. And after a year you can donate again. |

I happy I'm the only one scared of needles. I could donate blood but I'm not up to it. Maybe someday I'll get over fear but for some reason when I know pain is coming I can't take it...meanwhile I can fall off a fence 2 meters (about 79 inches) off the ground and not think twice about it . |

Posted by Drag kind of. your blood could be A, AB, B, or neither(O). it's two alleles, which opens up the possibility of A, B, AB, and even O. A and B always take dominance over O. so if it was AO, your blood type is A, but AA also is blood type A. with the rh+ and rh-, it opens up more possibilities. i think rh+ is more dominant(ie +- would be rh+). if you don't have a certain allele and are donated it, you die. if a person has, say, A- blood, and they're donated with A+ blood, they'll die because of the rh+(your blood literally will try to eat itself! how cool... and painful sounding ). i think that's kind of what makes sense, but ideally you'll want AB+ blood so you can accept blood from anyone... but you'd not be able to help much. if you have O- blood, your blood is very much wanted for donation. a person with O- blood can ONLY take in O- blood, else they die... so if you're a person with O- blood, i'd say it's much more important for you to donate your blood. |

Posted by DanielleI thought that first line was going to be a bad joke! Well my school is doing a blood drive, and I convinced myself to do it after thinking of the difference between a 3 second prick I have to have to help some one who's living in constant pain. Also, the thread title made me think this was going to be some emo thing. |

It's a sterility issue. I last gave just under a year after I got my tragus piercings, and they just asked about if I'd gotten them done with sterile needles. I had, and that satisfied them. Think as long as it's been a year, you're good.
Of course, it doesn't stop me from getting light-headed at the end. I think it's because I'm kind of a power bleeder. I can fill up that sack in half the time it takes yinz. And for the record, I believe I'm O+. I'm definitely type O, if the card's to be believed. |

Posted by Ailure considering the fear of the AIDS epidemic, it's pretty reasonable. but i still think it's a weird law, but if it's saving people from getting AIDS, i guess it's fine(but then, what's the opportunity cost of other people's lives?). of course, there's probably other reasons for it too, but i don't really know |

No, it's not that I'm gay, it's that I've had unprotected sex with a man (while being a man myself) since 1979.
Basically it's spreading the myth that a gay man is more likely to get AIDS than a straight man. I'd just lie anyways. I'm clean. |

AIDS is not transfered by blood. HIV is.
I know you're referring to HIV, but come on. Don't confuse those two terms. AIDS is usually caused by HIV, but AIDS itself can't be transfered. AIDS HIV Meh, I still think it's a stupid law. ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

Posted by Ailure i know the difference. i'm just saying AIDS because it's what most people collectively refer to it as. truth is, once you get HIV, you'll probably get AIDS later anyways. that's why people just say AIDS. i don't really see what's wrong with it too much. i know a man whose wife lost a lot of blood while giving birth to her daughter, so they gave her some blood, then his wife got HIV(then AIDS).. and later their next daughter did. they're just scared of it transferring. it's a way to slow the spread, so.. yeah. |
