While at work on Friday I decided to signup for the Windows Seven Beta. I did this once before with Windows 2k back in the late nineties. (Come to think about it around this time 10 years ago). I first installed it on one of our test machines at works and it actually didn't completely suck. I spent some time running some basic tests. The UAC starts at 3/4 and isn't asking you every 5 minutes to allow/deny. It was quite good about finding drivers on both systems. This afternoon I installed a copy on my second partion on my MBP. I'll be playing with it off and on and if anyone has any questions about it, I'll try answering them for you.

First Image

IE 8 and The board, the new "icon-o-bar", The "all my windows are belong in a box- mini tab". and transparency all around.

The only thing I have to say is they'd better still allow usage of the inefficient bars at the bottom of the screen... I don't like grouping windows into boxes...

Is there any possibility to make the icons in the icon bar smaller? As it is now, it seems like a terrible waste of valuable vertical space...

Next time I boot into 7 I'll test both those things. I hope so only because it would be another case of MS forcing a change on you. I'll keep you apprised.

I like the taskbar how it is in XP. No window-grouping, text on the button things (unless you have like, 500), etc.

I installed it. It's faster to install than Vista, although the system itself isn't that much quicker, also it requires 6GB less disk than Vista. Compatibility is worse than Windows Vista (eg: DaemonTools, Google Chrome; neither work). Visibly, the taskbar is the only real difference between Vista and Windows7. On a deeper note, it includes PowerShell version 2.0 and Internet Explorer 8, both of which are only of a real concern to developers. Interix 6.1 is also binary-incompatible with Windows Vista, so for example, this happens:
bash
Also the compilers are completely broken, so you can't even make good utilities to run. To most users, this Interix hub-bub won't be much of a deal, but it is to me.

Yes, you can make it smaller or restore the display of labels and make it look just like the old taskbars, if you wish.

More importantly, it can do this
chocolate

That is one nice screenshot.

I heard that anything that ran in Vista is supposed to run just as well in Seven. Blame it on the beta?

Edit: for comparison, here's the taskbar in (an approximation of) classic mode. Two options changed.

Obviously not made with the above methods.

IMO 7 looks more ubuntu rip-off than vista.

And I'm sure 7 will not work good on my laptop (ibm thinkpad t30, pentium4mobile 1,8hgz, 512mb ram, 16mb vram 1024x728 32bit screen etc) when XP sp2 is ssslllooowww, at last Linux mint w/ Kde runs good, even with Compiz

I'm not overly concerned as far as getting Chocolate Doom to run goes (don't they take a certain amount of pride in doing so on pretty much everything?), but how did they make that transparent backgroundless PNG screenshot? Is that a new feature or was that already around in Vista?

Seems like Microsoft is getting better at imitating Mac OS X... As usual...
Oh, and transparency is supposed to be a revolution?

Indeed as Kawa shows you can get the bar to look almost like the traditional task bar. There is a setting to only have it create the icon bar when the dock is crowded as well.

Chungy: What keystroke/method generates the backgroundless screenshot?

Neither, it's amusingly the result of a bug in Window Clippings (same program Wikipedia uses to make screenshots like this), I double-clicked the taskbar while taking a screenshot, and it instead takes the entire desktop with a transparent background. This isn't actually supposed to happen, but it's pretty neat.

And yes, we do take pride in running on just about every operating system. I even got it to run on DOS once, but it wasn't very usable.... maybe if I made a native DOS port, heh......... *gets to working on it*

Considering that the version in particular I'm talking of was released May 2007, long before Windows 7 had any leaks or before the name of Windows 7 even, has no such effect on Windows Vista, the program's intended operating system, it's a bug. You don't even need to look so far to tell that it's a bug, not a feature.

It damn well should be a feature though. The results are awsum enough to warrant it.

Honestly, it's been BSODing alot on me for some reason :/

I will be looking forward to the actual release, if it wasn't for the crashing i'd be in love with it.

The one I installed on the VM had only four days left today, so I reinstalled on another VM. Also found some new functions... at least, new for me as I skipped Vista...

You could simply activate it...

Also some people have reported that reseting the activation period works just as it did on Vista (I haven't tested this).
