In the devastation wrought by the Acmlmocalypse, I've been doing some thinking about the places I'd been, before that.

My first real home on the internet was a visual chat program called The Palace. It was very fancy at the time -- around 1992 -- and since I'd not yet discovered the superior text-only nature of IRC, it seemed like a fun way to kill time.
Initially I would only connect to the default server, but then as I discovered the server directory, I began to bounce around until finally settling on one called The Anime Carnival.

I spent about seven years there. For the most part, it was nice.
Eventually the Palace software was bought out by another company which started its slow descent into moronity. I left when when TAC's owner handed the keys over to a known idiot because she just didn't care anymore.

In between, I spent about six months on an MMORPG called Dark Ages (not to be confused with Dark Ages of Camelot). I had actually found DA through its older sister Nexus, but given that neither was free and I only had enough money for one, I chose DA because I preferred its art style and it had better RPers.
I still hang around there (only these days I settle for recurring free trials), but with the fact that all the RPers have left (both), Nexus actually getting updates and new features, and DA being an endless grindfest while Nexus remains somewhat entertaining, I have shifted my focus.

But, yeah. My main stint in MMOland lasted six months. After that I drifted aimlessly through cyberspace until I came across SCII.org, which was basically a bunch of geeks coming up with way better ideas for Starcraft 2 than Blizzard will ever have, due largely to the fact that Blizzard will never actually get around to making Starcraft 2. The site eventually tanked, and was revived as OmniverseZero. I don't think any of the old crowd still hangs there.

That was keen for a while, but eventually I moved on, when an old friend from TAC introduced me to Bob and George. I didn't touch the BnG forums themselves very often. Only to inform my half-dozen loyal fans of updates to my own comic. Mostly I stayed at the Primer Chronicles' forums, but I also hung out in #bobandgeorge on whatever the hell server it was.

But after not too long a time, I ended up being too busy to work on my comics, then Primer ended and the forum lost all activity (My comic's thread was the largest by far), and so I moved on.

The next place I camped out -- if only for a month or two -- was the Pokemon boards on GameFAQs. I was there when Fire Red got its own social board. Fun and stupidity were both abundant.

Not long after, I ended up adminning a forum that went by the initials PACM. The less said about that, the better.
Heh, you think Ace's draws a bad crowd? We drew AHM. I banned myself and never went back.

And then I came here.

So, what about the rest of you. Where did you hang before now?

Originally, as of 2000, I joined the forums at a place named Video Gamers First (VGF). I joined to text battle people, and did so for a while, then posted normally. Things went fine up until near 2005-2006, where they switched from the very good UBB board to a horrible vBulletin system, and then allowed idiots to roam freely. However I haven't left it per se; it got better later on, but it bores me now.

In the median I found IRC and an RPG named Super Smash Quest, which I played until its owner left for College... but he gave the keys to me, beginning a massive saga in which I am now thankful for, as I now have my own server and a small army of followers.

I also hang out at Sonic 2 Beta, which I originally discovered back when it was an Ezboard, then rediscovered years later and rejoined. Turns out I know (and knew) a number of now-famous figures there.

Adding to my Sonic community experience, I joined an RPG named MobiusRP and roleplayed there until it nearly died--then I just took over for the admin and got it back running again with the help of some other staff members.

Also I hang out at Super Smash Stadium, sister site to my RPG SSQ.

I joined Acmlm's board to replace VGF; it looked to be experiencing VGF-like problems recently (see: Board I drama) but seems to have levelled out, thankfully.

Let's see...

The less said about my earlier days online (really pretty much everything pre-Acmlm), the better... I really don't want to be associated with them. Quite early on, I was into ZZT, a 1990 DOS-based game. I was rather young then as well, and the ZZT community of then was notably insulting towards anyone new... my meager and completely terrible attempts at games did not go over well, and after getting a spectacularly insulting flame, I left ZZT for good.

So, I floated around, and eventually ended up into Zelda Classic. The program was fascinating, and I was trying to make a game with it. In my desperation to have released something, I released a spectacularly crappy "hard version" hack which consisted of taking away Link's graphics so you couldn't see him. People just ignored it, of course. Computer problems wiped out my in-progress game, and I found myself unable to restart it, so I didn't.

After that I discovered ROM Hacking, which led me to Acmlm's... I've also lurked around on the Sonic hacking community boards (as "Neo Majin"), and some other boards.

Palace! I haven't thought about that in awhile. I used to chat with a few net friends while playing around with Palace as a coloring book of sorts. Interest dwindled eventually, partially thanks to MMOGs.

Next haunt was years later at a place called metajournal.net which was made by a guy from my highschool and frequented mostly by people from my hometown. It died when nobody wanted to keep paying for it.

I dunno if GameFAQs counts as a haunt of mine, because it wasn't even thirty posts before I got sick of the morons. Especially the SSBB board.. ugh. Products of parents who should have used protection.

But luckily I discovered acmlm's and ROMhacking both while at the GF Zelda LttP forum. I wonder how long I'll be around here?

Hmmm... I cant remember much...

When I was twelve, going on thirteen, I signed up for GameFAQs. I didnt really settle in there though. It never drew me in though, and I never felt apart of the community. So a year later, I stumble across acmlms. (Yes, through SMW hacking. Dont make fun of what I was back then jerks 8( )

I registered at Acmlms and stuck with it...

...

And here I am

...

Wow, I have such a boring internet life...

Hmm...

My first hangout ever was on a Usenet group I believe. alt.fan.sonic-hedgehog if I am not mistaken. I only stuck around there while I was a user of the accursed WebTV. Those were horrid days indeed, not just because WebTV sucked, but also because I was 12 or so and not well versed in internets. When I lost WebTV I went dead for a while, save for a few periods when I made updates to my never-visited website.

I eventually returned to the social scene at a place called Netraptor.org. It was fun enough, and I stuck around three years. Gradually though, the place filled with trolls and a negative attitude, and the original admin handed the forums over to the current admin, who moved to a new domain, Starpost... something. (NR.org is currently being converted into the original admin's home business or somesuch.) That didn't last long with me. I... erm, went insane and got banned just recently, and since nobody there is friendly anymore I have decided to leave it and make this place my new e-home.

I've also been to many smaller forums, including about four incarnations of my forum, XBoard, but those hardly bear mentioning. Although one was so controversial, it caused several other forums to get shut down because the admin were losing. That was awesome.

My internets quest started in... uh, 1999-2000, I think. My ISP was AOL, and they have that "Kids only" thing there, and I did stuff in there a lot. About 6 months later, the computer died and I was internetless for about a year. When I had it again, I found a neat little MMORPG called Tibia. Played that mostly for a year.

Then (since I was young) I put my trust in a total stranger and he made off with my account, so I exclusively did my other time-waster, GameFAQs. My account there is 5 years old, if it still exists... and I used it loads for about three years. It was about the time of the gamespot + gameFAQs merge, and the mods got much stricter, so after several moderations (but no actual purg or ban, suprisingly), I got bored of that and left.

It was a little bit after that I invented the handle "Tatrion". I joined Acmlm's board under that, and... the rest is history.

I started roleplaying in battle.net chatrooms, gamefaqs boards, ff.net communities, and various Acmlmboards, in that order. I wouldn't consider any of those my primary online hangouts however.

Some friends in college introduced me to FFXI in my first year and it ended up being the first pay-to-play MMORPG that I had actually bothered with. Of course within the following 2-3 years I realized that it was a colossal waste of time, but as it is a game that typically requires you to form a 6-man party to do anything beyond tying your own shoes, I quickly found and became part of a very tightly-knit community. I play both it and WoW far more casually than I used to, but many of the same people I started the game with still hang out and do stupid shit, so it's still fun to log in once and a while, even if it is nothing more than a glorified chat room to me.

Acmlm's Board was actually the first "real" community I ever went to (most of it before that was just browsing around randomly...)

(I guess that explains a lot...)

Before Acmlm's? Nowhere, really. I just browsed the Internet for roms and cheats.

Basically once I joined Acmlm's is when I began branching out to various places.

CountingDown

Messageboard dedicated to a specific movie/series. I joined in the late 90's. Around 97/98 and it was okay. It was a bit on the boring side since the messageboard was solely dedicated to a specific topic (Specific movie or series) and the members really did not talk about anything else. It had way too many members on the site. Slow as hell.

...I was part of the DBZ messageboard on CD.

AnimeGrapevine

I <3 this place. That is, when I first joined. I joined in around 98/99 and it was visually more appealing than CD. Sadly, it went down for quite a time. I was known back then as Outlaw. It did come back and I excited for it but interest was lost. There was a 3 year seperation from the board going down and it coming back up.

Got Korn

As the name says. Messageboard about that band. Not really interesting. I stopped paying attention to it 3 years ago.

GrapeGardens.

Kirbynite's old acmlmboard based message board. I joined this in either late 2002, or early 2003. I don't remember. I knew about it due to word of mouth. I was friends with a friend of Kirbynite's now ex girlfriend. My friend told me to check it out and thus I did. I'll be honest and say that I was a bit stupid back then. After I joined, the member count increased due to the fact that a few people that I knew from school joined up as well.

When I found Acmlm's, I divided my attention between both. GrapeGardens died from inactivity around the time I moved in late 03. After I came back, Kirbynite revived it and it was okay, but...drama started rather quickly. I came back wiser than I left and thus, I will admit that I did not help matters with what I said. I told Kirbynite I was never going to come back.

I did come back, but board die again due to inactivity. Kirbynite is the in mist of working on it using his own board scheme. I sometimes forget about it.

Sidenote: When I first joined it, Kirbynite and I didn't get along. I didn't like the pink fluffy. After my two year hiatus from the net, I came back and decided I would atleast attempt to be friends with Kirbynite or atleast not dislike him.

Years later, for my part, Kirbynite is one of my closest friends. I bug the hell out of him and stuff but I appreciate his friendship.

Vizzed/AntiReality

Boards I joined around the moment I joined the first Acmlm's Board.

Vizzed was owned by Davideo77. I was made admin, I ruled with an iron fist since there was quite a bit spamming going on. loldrama happened and I resigned. I came back after my hiatus and realized the board turned to shit (more so than before) and Davideo lost his damn mind. I stopped going there.

Xeogaming was a member of Vizzed before. Later in IRC, he would tell me that he was once Master Sephiroth, which would rock my world since it felt like meeting a long lost cousin.

I also met Randy on Vizzed. We talked, we made Antireality. AR died due to many many reasons. Hacked, lack of interest, busy schedules. Xk destroyed one version of AR. I was involved. When the subject of deleting it came up, I sorta told Xk he should do it.

Even though I had 'head admin' level on AR, I didn't like the staff and the way the board was going. Plus I was bored, so all and all, Xk destroying it was fun.

I started off somewhere around 1996 or 1997. While I was a lurker and passive user mostly (also a user of 25MHz Sun SPARC workstations... that teaches you to be really passive), I did make the one or other post on occasional hacker or script kiddie boards in miserable English.

Around 2000 or 2001, I joined the cEvo project (which was in its first steps back there; cEvo is a Civilization 2 clone) which also was the first larger collaborative/open-source project I participied in. I started being quite active, and my English improved a lot in process. I was involved to a large degree in writing the current C++ AI interface/stub (one of cEvo's best features is that it allows you to write your own AI modules which are dynamically loaded at runtime). A bit later into that, I wrote a map editor for it (which was the first of its kind in cEvo). It had a short-lived time of glory of like two weeks, after which the lead coder of the project released his own, better, built-in editor; I was pissed off at that and quit. (That's probably the single lamest thing I ever did on the internets. )

Around that time, I also joined a German browser MMOG, War of Galaxy; it was my first trip into the awesome world of having no real life. While it involved getting up at 3 AM to send out attacks timed to halves of a second together with other members of one's alliance or enable planetary energy shields to block a planetbuster bomb, it actually was quite fun.
The fact it was, apparently, spread out on the net by "mouth propaganda" over time. Guess what was next? n00b influx, in all negative meanings the word "n00b" can convey. The game's administrators got overwhelmed by add revenue greed and decided to listen to their majority rule, which led to a number of "newbie protection" measures being put up, including moronic restrictions as to who can attack whom and when. The strategical aspects of the game pretty much died. Along with many of the older players, I left.

Somewhen around 2003, I was googling for a Secret of Mana map editor, hoping it might exist (I got into the fancy world of emulation quite a while before already). Google brought up FuSoYa's site ("map editor" was on it, with LM, and "Secret of Mana" was as well, with the VWF patch). I saw Lunar Magic, liked it and followed his link to Acmlm's Board.

Lessee...I started out my forum existence on VGF in...2001? Yea. Back then I was a fucktard. Sooo...Somewhere around 2003-2004 I got my first ban. (VGF had a 'Three strikes and you're out' rule). I rejoined immediately after and became a hell of a lot more intelligence. Though, I still had some semblances of stupidity. I left VGF somewhere around 2004...Or 2005. Can't remember which.

I then left for a forum called The Fallout Shelter. Stayed there for a good year and a half under the name Black Skull Dragoshi. I was a partial-lurker there, until mid 2006, at which point I became a full lurker, though I still chat with some of my friends from there on AIM.

Though, during that lapse of interest, I wandered, looking for something that would help me kill boredom...And, then I remembered a certain RPG...Super Smash Quest. I wanted to join there way back in the past...But, I was too stupid know what the hell mIRC was, or even Trillian for that matter. But, anyway, sometime around May or March 2006 I joined in, using Trillian. Sometime around July, I switched to mIRC, and continued from there. But, eh.

And, to finish this, I joined Acmlm's through a link to one of the topics. Aaaand, you guys know the rest, and now i'm here. Floosh

I started a bit late... 2003. But I got used to it very quickly. I knew about those things called emulators before... I still remember when I saw SMW in my compter screen (yes, it was the first rom I had...)

I knew about the existence of RPGMaker... I then saw a site called "Maker Fantasy" that was about it... I'll never forget that place. It became my second home...

In 2004... I knew about gamemaker and I started to know about hacking... that made me visit the board frequently.

in 2005, maker fantasy died. I was in many other boards (I still go to one of them too) A bit later I joined to what is my current home (not second home XD)

Some time later I joined acmlm.

I am, for the most part, still kind of new to the internets.

Before I got my laptop, I was pretty much restricted to AIM, with very little else because of how strict my parents were (and still are). I would occasionally read fanfics, but that was about it.
When I got my laptop, I began to explore. ;D Since I was absolutely in love with Uma Thurman, I quickly found a message board dedicated to her, and that place became my crack. Seriously. I met YD there, who pissed me off like no other for many weeks. I'm pretty sure I pissed her off too. WE DID NOT GET ALONG. She thought she was way too cool for me or something. But eventually, we got to talking on AIM and became BEST FRENDES. She introduced me to a few other people from Ace's at the time, we played hearts together and it was good times. I think they approved of me. A few weeks later, she convinced me to join Acmlm's, even though I wasn't nearly as into gaming as she was. I joined to shut her up, and remained largely inactive until the next summer, when a mixture of boredom and curiosity convinced me to begin posting more. I pretty much went crazy in this respect, and became really really active. That carried over to the next incarnation of the board, where I continued to be active.

And now here we are.

The closest thing to an "old haunt" I had was both Neopets () and some online game making community (still there today).

I don't really know every exact aspect of my "internet story", but meh.

I can only remember.. I got a 56k connection in 1999, when I was nine. I was just visiting some random sites back then.

Jump to ~2002, where I heard about that nifty RPG-Maker 2000. It was pretty funny messing around with it. After a few weeks, I noticed that the website hosting it also had a forum.. and so I joined. The first forum I ever was at, heh. I was obviously somewhat confused what all that stuff was.. (I never was the most active guy when it came to posting, by the way.)

A few months later, I discovered that this site also had a chat, an IRC one, with a java client. I joined their channel, and this could be called pretty much the beginning of everything. I didn't only joined their channel for a few minutes, I stayed. And stayed. I came back every day, sometimes even stayed the whole night. I stayed even longer when I was told to use mIRC instead of that java stuff.

Which caused huge bills because we still had 56k.

I've met a few people who were pretty cool at that time, some of them even became friends for a good amount of time in my life. I've even met someone very nice during a community convention who's still a friend today.

I someday (2004) left that community, because I realized that most people were total retards (in my opinion). Since then, I just visited certain sites about certain topics that I was interested in, such as some emulation-related ones, like Zophar's Domain, to see if they had updates. I haven't really found a place/community that appealed to me back then. I still stayed in IRC with a few friends, though.

Someday then, early 2006 or something, one of these sites talked about Super Mario 64 hacking, and linked to a thread in Acmlm's Board. I figured that this place is pretty neat, so I kept lurking around. I've registered not very much later after that, but started "posting" in late November 2006.

Yeah.. not very exciting.

For what it's worth, this is far more interesting than my topic.

I had been an internet user since 1999, where I found this gaming message board. I lurked quite a bit, but never posted. I got fed up with lurking because I had dial-up, and my connection to the internet was awful. It took, like, two minutes to load the thread lists. I'd go off and get a snack or something like that in-between browsing threads.

I found it again in late 2000, where I actually started posting. I actually made some good friends on that board, and still can vividly remember quite a few of them. They were a fun bunch, actually, and the general population there was quite young, so I didn't have much trouble fitting in, although I was still a young one there. I posted until about late 2001, when it pretty much kicked the bucket.

Soon after, my internet home became AGN. My Dad found this program called Zelda Classic, and he quickly forgot about it, but I totally dug it because of its quest designer (Bloodstar is one of the few users here who uses ZC). It was this little thing that let you make Zelda 1 (and other Zelda)-style games. It was pretty cool, although the community is kind of sucking as of late, but there are still some good things to come from it. Anyway, I found ZC in early 2001, and I was, umm, 10 (around the same time, I found out about Emulation). So a few months later I joined AGN, ZC's official home, and began to lurk around and make the occasional post. I was, however, a colossal idiot, so I was soon expelled from that board.

Fast forward to 2002, my internet-community of choice this time being GameFAQs. I didn't post very often until late 2003, where I made some awesome friends on the RI board (which, by the way, sucks now). I remain friends with a few of these people today. Around this time I kind of became a LUEser, something I don't like to admit nowadays, but I was.

Around the same time that I became active on GameFAQs I joined PureZC, a fansite dedicated to the aforementioned Zelda Classic. It was a lot more happy and friendly than AGN was, and I met Bloodstar, Seanbox344, and Banedon, all Acmlmers (who in turn introduced me to the site), not to mention some other people who are pretty awesome. I actually knew Bloodstar before he was a member of Acmlm's. Friendship points yay

I've been lurking Acmlm's for a while now, and posted pretty rarely, sometimes hanging out in #rohmacking. However, when I found out about Xk's resignation I was kind of a little surprised, even as a lurker, so I decided to become a bit more active because, well, the events interested me. But hey, I've actually kind of enjoyed board2 so far. It'll probably become my main happy-posting-land of choice for a while now.

Not much, really, Acmlm's was the first really community I got involved with. Prior to that, the only board I had been posting at was the GameFAQs, but I never stayed at a single subforum there long enough to actually get to know people (I've later somewhat settled at the Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy Origins and Classic Gaming boards, though I've never been a very active member over there).

Curerntly I'm somewhat active at 12 different boards (GameFAQs included... by "active" I mean "might check once every few days"), so I've kind of branched out a bit from there

I've been using the internet for a very long time. Probably since around 1997-1998. My computer at the time was this crazy (but really cool now that I think about it ) thing. I wouldn't do a whole lot online... I would mostly just browse bluemountain.com (e-card place. I think it was better back then than it is now), being amazed at the java applets and the cool music.

At some point, my brother showed me Nesticle, and we were both pretty impressed that you could play NES games on the computer. That's when I learned about emulation and roms and such, but I wasn't aware of any community or anything.

I wanted to make games, so I did some Yahoo searches (probably before Google became what it is now), and I found ZZT. I played some games, and I made some (really crappy) games too, but meh. I wasn't part of that community either. Then later, I found Klik 'n Play, by clickteam. I fooled around with the demo version until my parents let me get the full version of The Games Factory (same company, updated software).

I'm pretty sure I registered on the clickteam forums, but I wasn't a very active member or anything. I wasn't really into message boards, I guess.

At some point, I got a newer computer (a laptop) that had Windows 98 on it, and SOMEHOW, I found out about yy's mario editor. I fooled around with that completely stunned! Yay, level editz0r! So, using yy-mario, I find out about Zophar, but I didn't register there or anything, and more importantly, I found the smb2 discombobulator.

At this point, I just lurked at the board for a while, and then later decided to register. It was so fun, it was great! Then we found Graal, and I was a regular there, until it went p2p. Anyways, I became a moderator of the Graal forum. At some point later, the staff begins using IRC, and I'm notified about it since I was 'staff' at the time. Then later, everyone used IRC. IRC has since become a very integral part of my cyber-life. You know how some people are frequently on AIM? Well, IRC is my AIM.

So yeah, it was wonderful, and 3 or 4 years later, I reregister (har har).

Then I just kinda leave for a good year or so (but my IRC activity was as strong as ever, first at #nw, but I split that scene in favor of the #rom-hacking community), and then I register again (late into the 3rd incarnation), and again here.

I think that's about all of it.
