when we are old then noobs will come and become experts eventually adding new power-ups to SUPER MARIO GALAXY and crazy stuff like. that right now is nearly impossible even with the right tools.

Quite frankly, I think that gaming is developing in a direction where ROM hacking as we got to know it won't be possible. Even without the whole casual gaming block that's not even worth the effort, the gap between what a person with a home computer can do and what the large software houses can throw out every two months is getting larger. One might be tempted to describe it as some sorts of neolithic revolution of game development - as it is now, too many aspects of modern games require a level of ability to imitate or adequately substitute that you'll hardly find a single person to have mastered even two of them at a sufficient level; meanwhile, if anything, we got worse at teamwork over the years.

Life isn't about going up or down. Everyone is going forwards. Tragedy is, no-one is going in the same direction.

Coming to think of it, Douglas Adams' Sperm Whale[1] was an awfully appropriate metaphor for life...

Looking back at the above post, I wonder just how pathetical I am going to be once it's actually an age-appropriate trait for me.

It's hard to say what will happen with this place - I can imagine blackhole keeping it up even if it's only a few regulars and then some who frequent the place by then, but who knows. By then, I can probably see IRC being used more often than the board.

Many people are leaving this place as it is, although we're getting newer members too. When Lazy Shell is finished and they do setup a forum here I can see an influx of romhacking people coming in (the same which happened with JUL and SM64) which in turn will probably start increasing the activity here.

The board would also need some sort of enforcement on people who just go around and say everythings horrible and are harsh on newbies who are romhacking. A lot of people have left just because people jump on them when they do one thing wrong, and when other people see posts such as these, especially when the admins do nothing about it, they most likely won't post either.

For me, I'll probably start visiting this place less due to more demanding things in real life, but I can still see this place being up for another.. oh, 3 - 4 years? After that, I don't know what will happen. By then I'll probably have stopped coming here altogether

That would also make for one fantastic obituary...

"----- died today in his mother's basement. His final act on this earth was posting on a message board about why wings are better than telekinesis. He is survived by his mother."

There are a few possible ways to salvage the art of ROM hacking. One would be to develop an AI that assists people in reverse engineering & then modifying the code, making it more manageable (although it would also let game makers make things even harder). Another would be if games become more standardized (which might happen if they become too complex even for teams of people to handle), which I could easily see happening with the development of such things as physics cards & various genre-specific libraries (consider all the games using the Quake & Unreal engines).

Then again, if every game used its own unique form of DRM (instead of everyone using one of a few standard DRM methods), it might become too great an effort even to get to the point where you know whether or not it is feasible to hack a game.

If the day comes when we are living in the Internet, it is bound to be at least somewhat standardized (so everyone can interact in a meaningful way), & people will start hacking it so they really can do psychokinesis & such.
