What do you think's gonna happen when most of our active users turn into elders? Do you think Board2 is going to survive that long? I highly doubt that.

I just think the internet will become obsolete by that time. We'd be going to our possible grandchildren; "Back in our time, we only had this thing called the internet!". It'd belike the time where OUR grandparents talked about only having radios.

Speaking of old people, who's the oldest member in Board2? I believe it is Zaxamillion, a contributer of the Fraxy community/compendium/whatever. Based off of one of his posts in GenericBoard, he appears to be around 30-40 years of age.

I don't think the internet is going to die out that soon, just like we still have the postal system, the phone network, television, hell, even teletext. Of course, what it is like might severely change, so would much of the technical basis - but even the most modern desktop computer architectures still building on x86 gives you a fairly good idea of how clingy a high-investition technical society is to old assets, making the utmost thing possible a smooth transition into a somewhat different structure. Of course, one thing that might happen is a political "pirates"/"criminals"/"pedophiles"/"terrorists"/"slanderers" scare that results in communication as a whole being capped to a degree sufficient to make the internet in its present form cease to exist... We'll probably have our own portion of "wartime ramblings" about the wild days of essentially living outside the law to share.

Who knows, maybe there will be serious literature about blogging from high-altitude balloons. Think Western fiction.

As for board2... as a hoster, the two possible outcomes I see (and I don't want to sound pessimistic as much as imply that I consider this the natural path for all things to take earlier or later...) is that it either eventually depopulates to a degree that I shut it down, or I reach the point where I think I got on with my life myself and think it is time to hand hosting down to somebody with more of a connection to things. More hops of hosting transition might ensue, as well as splits watering down the whole thing... by the time we are retired, it will either have met the first consequence or have transformed into something none of us recognize anymore. (By continuation, this board has been around for 8 years now, if not longer... even in my five years, I dare say it has changed almost beyond recognition, and you could probably count the people still around here from back when I joined with your ten fingers in unary)

As for the oldest people here... as far as those I'm aware of go, that'd be Kawa, Ailure, KP9000, MathOnNapkins, NSNick... basically the 22+ guard. I've gone from probably being one of the kids everyone facepalmed over to being one of those facepalming over the kids myself...

I don't think board2 will be around by the end of 2009, personally, if things keep going the way they are now.

And ... the internet of the future? Piloted by search engines who are paid to put certain sites on top. Smaller communities will die out, more of our shit will be stored online, etc.

As for myself, I imagine I won't spend that much time online by mid 2010. In the 10 years I've been actively browsing the internet I've watched the .. "vibe" of things change drastically, especially on a personal level. When I first registered at a message board I pretended I was 18 (I was 10), and everyone there believed me, so I assume it was a pretty good act, where as now I'm told I act immature ahaha

Haha! Board2 will survive, as long as someone will care about videogame hacks. Even after 50 years, I shall be with you, after all, videogames are my passion.

Boards die, that's all there is to it. Not to be cynical or anything, but even the smallest thing could lead to one falling apart. I've seen it happen before, like, 5 times.

Say for instance a fight breaks out among a few people on IRC. Simple thing, happens all the time, right? Then say the admins get in the fight and choose sides. It's happened before. Now assume they get so pissed off that the board splits right down the middle, and becomes two (Hell, it happened before. Remember ||Board?)

Or perhaps people just lose interest. Happened before for me, too. Romendo was going alright, but then the owner was like "Eh, it's been fun" and basically left the internet. The ownerless board did not last long.

Another thing that could happen is severe hacking attempts. This happened to Ice Board (I'm looking at YOU, Roger ), where the place is hacked so much that people eventually lose interest in waiting for it to be normal again.

Course, there are other things, like merging (Which I don't often agree with doing myself) and whatnot, but you get the idea. There are a billion ways Board2 could go, and for all you know, Stark and BH are shouting at each other in the IRC right now, and who knows what could come of that, hmm?

Well, I'm fairly certain Stark doesn't have db access, so he'd probably just leave in a huff and come back a week or two later...

As far as the degeneration of board2 is concerned, it's probable inevitable, though I don't think it will be as soon as the end of '09. It's still got a couple good years in it.

It's strange being one of the youngest in a community and then being one of the oldest after sticking around.

I always think how funny it is that when I'm old I might still be keeping in touch with some people I knew almost exclusively on the internet back in the 2000s.

I don't know what will happen. I know I generally (read: 98% of the time) keep in touch with people via IRC, so I suppose as people leave that I'll fall out of touch with them. Myself, I see the internet as being a 'wild west' of sorts right now, with lawmakers trying bravely to corral it. As for board2, I think it'll last longer than the end of 2009- because as a whole, it's not dying right now, it's expanding and growing. Eventually it'll die, yes, but the matter of the death itself I have no clue on. Who knows, perhaps a ||board-style split, or server crash, or whatever. The real question I'd have is, what next?

Well, that's my two cents.

I generally like to keep in touch with people after a community disbands for whatever reason. It's nice to see how they are coping with the change, and if they might have found another community to be a part of.

As for what I think might happen when we're all old geezers, I think someone might finally finish that one PS3 hack of God Of War 3 when I'm... oh, say 72 years old. And I might find that rare dump of the never-before-released prototype of Duke Nukem Forever. Then I'll post about it on board37.

By the time we reach old age, either civilization as we know it will have ended (global nuclear war, economic collapse, a super-virus that wipes out all computers or most people, or something like that), or we will all be living in the Internet or its successor. Or both.

Either way, if this board still exists, it will be a curious relic of the past.

Haha, I can just picture 100 years from now, when the internet is practically a physical land in which all people live in, people digging through old URLs and finding lost ruins of forums and stuff. It'd be like finding ancient ruins and stuff, that'd be awesome.

"I found a once popular website! ...Board...2... Sounds odd."
"LOL I BET IT SUCKED."

I am an old geezer in a way. I've been off and on this board alone for 10 years. I was there since day two. Now I've lost contact with many many people over these years, I still have contact with some too.

The fickle nature of the internet, I think this board will continue one in some form for a long time after even this generation stops posting. It outlived Acmlm and Myself. The code powers two RO servers' front ends, and a few other forums. I stopped working on EmuNET and Bouche continued the idea a new with his IRC services.

Connections with people can remain, it just takes effort on both parties to do so.

Wanting everything to stay the same is .. fickle, to say the least. A lot of friends I had before I went to college were scared nothing would be the same, and if any of them sought comfort in me, I was honest with them. Things change.

Life isn't about going up or down. Everyone is going forwards. Tragedy is, no-one is going in the same direction.
