Freespace 2 is a space combat simulation game. After it was no longer sold, Volition released the rights to the source code to the public. The game is constantly improved upon by modders; the level of detail in the above screenshot is nothing like what it originally was.

A good example is the difference between the previous update and the latest, most notibly the GTF Ulysses:

Previous update (V3.6.9):

Current (V3.6.10):

You can get the installer HERE.

Like all good things, they have their own wiki.

as badass as this looks, it requires a retail copy of FreeSpace2 to play, so it's sadly not completely free...

Last I checked, it wasn't...

EDIT: SON OF A BITCH. Since 'Good old Games' re-released it, they've changed the requirements. It USED to be free, though.

2 places you can still get it:

Home of the underdogs page - download is broken at the moment, though.

Good Old Games page - 5.99, no DRM, no strings attached. Worth it if you ask me.

Of course, you could also get it from some other places... but I won't link to those for good reasons. *COUGHpiracyCOUGH*

But you're not able to get it for free on those two sites either. *goes to pirate it*

Six bucks for a great, DRM-free game, and people still pirate it? Sheesh.

I don't live in the US and I have no idea what the shipping would land on.

GOG uses digital distribution.

Ok. Hm. 6 bucks is...46 SEK. But I don't know how I'd pay.

1.2 GB. Hm. I've seen torrents at 2 GB or a bit more. They're probably compressed differently.

I wasn't trying to guilt you into buying it legit, Trapster...I was just making a comment about the state of piracy at large. Don't think I was singling you out for criticism .
